Can Target Display Mode slow down the source machine ?

The question came up last night, so out of curiosity:

Say e.g. I have a Mac Pro with software that takes advantage of the grahics cards and use an old iMac as the display.

Will the slow iMac graphic (somehow) slow down the the whole setup ?

Just wondering.
