Q: OSX Install not working on new Macbook

I have a new Macbook 12" Retina, 250GB HD, 8GB RAM. It was on display in the shop, Yosemite 10.10 preinstalled. The recommended I do a reset to have a clean new install.

So I got home, started with command-R and wiped the HD. After a restart I had the option for a fresh install of OS X. Great, I thought. So I connected to my WLan and started the installation. I waited. Nothing happened. The installation progress bar did not indicate any progress. After 20 minutes I did a restart, and started the install again. This time I got a time indication: 1 hour and some minutes. But it stood still.

I hit command-L for a look into the process log. I found a long list of

yosemite installassistant[403] could not find package

yosemite installassistant[403] could not find package

yosemite installassistant[403] could not find package

with many different kinds of packages noted. And at th end:

WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSView is deprecated on 10.7 and later.

I tried many times and always got the same problem. So I took another approach and prepared an USB installer for 10.11 el capitan. I started up with "option" and was able to chose the USB drive. The installer came up. I got into disk utiliy again and wiped the HD again. Then commence install. Progress bar came up, install time 13 minutes, all looking good. The it stopped after 30 seconds saying "can not be installed, error 0" or something like that.

So now I am really p** off! I am out of options. Any suggestions here?

TIA

Thom

If the unit was a display model and may have been set up with some kind of user account

before you bought it, was the dealer or shop an official Apple Authorized reseller/service

provider? They should have prepared it for re-sale if that was the case, and if it was used

then, they should have disclosed that status and also correctly prepared it for re-sale...

Previous associations with an Apple ID or other user setup have to be redacted by one

who can do that correctly; did the shop say anything about helping return the MacBook

to its original status, so a new user/owner could set up a new account?

You may have to see if you can use OS X Recovery (unless the storage drive has

somehow been totally erased) or go and try the online Recovery to download a

new system. There are some steps that should have been done before re-selling

a computer that had been used as a Demo or had been a returned/owned unit...

    http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/how-reinstall-mac-os-x-using-internet-recov ery-3593641/

Since I'm not doing these steps much if at all, and most of my computers use an

OS X install DVD (and do not need online OS X Recovery) they use different ones

to recover from some kind of trouble; or if replacing a hard drive with a new one.

You have tools in the Recovery (see how to boot in recovery, command R, in the

instruction about OS X recover above) and OS X Utilities are available then, too.

Once the existing content of the 'hard drive' is erased, the original partition with

the OS X Recovery usually may disappear; depending on if the entire drive was

reformatted so its partition would also be erased from the storage drive. The

installer you tried probably could not find those files needed to complete the task.

The original system as it shipped with, is what supposedly would be offered as a

download installation; so that may have varied from the first model 12-in MacBook

(retina) as a newer OS X appeared & would have been available in later production

and if the Apple ID of previous setup (if ownership and update files were associated)

a new affiliation with your Apple ID would need to be created, by using new install

of original system and then upgrade (download) a later system, if available. If the

unit shipped with Yosemite, then that's what it would need initially.

    • OS X versions and builds included with Mac computers - Apple Support

Perhaps someone will suggest a shorter route; however you will need to have an

adequate internet connection with suitable bandwidth to download a new OS X...

The seller should have provided or offered to provide the restore service to set up

the computer as-new. Since they did not, hopefully they gave you a huge discount.

Is there an official retail Apple Store with Genius bar in your region or country?

That is where you should take the unit, after checking to set up reservation to

talk to someone about this specific unit. Advance appointments can help a lot.

At this point, I don't have much else to say...

As described in my post, I have already done all proper procedure like explained here

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support

The problem is, like already described too, that the procedure do not work. I already provided the information about the errors that occur. Now I need input about those errors.

Your new computer has 90-day coverage for support and one year service/repair

so you have some time to burn on the idea of getting support for the problem...

    http://www.apple.com/support/applecare/

    If bought from an Official retail Apple Store, you have 14-days to arrange a return;

if bought through an Authorized reseller, as independent business, they don't need

to offer to accept a return or exchange after point of sale. An Apple Store with Genius

can help re-set the OS X and they have faster internet access than most homes...

If you aren't in a country with an official Apple Store, an authorized Apple service

provider can do the procedure & may not charge you. OTOH, Apple genius, is free.

    Sorry to have wasted some time here. I could've been outdoors shoveling, at 1AM;

it pays just same -- since it's my time and my snow -- once it falls here. Good luck.

    All okay now!

I tried the same command-R at startup today - right before I would have be gone back to the store as a next step. Installation over the internet is in progress now, it is not hanging anymore.

I would say Apples server had a blackout yesterday. There really is no other explanation. Glad it's working now.

But it still bothers me that the install by USB drive was not possible, at least that should have been working.

    Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Did you create a bootable installer on USB such as suggested here:

http://diskmakerx.com/   ? Between that, and Time Machine backup,

and a system clone on external drive (with its own power supply) you

could be able to fully restore your Mac OS X & apps, offline...

Glad you were finally able to get to the correct file to install the OS X.

I never had a problem using the createinstallmedia command line.
