I don't think there is such a thing as a USB-to-FireWire cable, not one that is actually works. USB and FireWire are very different, including voltage of the power that is used for charging.

So, you are saying that it no longer connects to iTunes, even when you use a FireWire cable and connect it to a FireWire port? Does it still charge when you connect it to your FireWire power adapter?

A regular reboot (called a Reset by Apple) is this

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support- the section iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)

I thought you already did that, but if you have not, try that first. A Reset just restarts the iPod; data is not erased. You would also do this procedure, if your iPod ever locked up and started acting funny (like skipping over songs). Letting the battery drain completely (or disconnecting the battery) was to remove power from the logic board. That sometimes helps when the regular Reset does not help.

My firewire charger is kaput, also. iPod does charge via computer with firewire connection. everything works except for the time app. when charging; the mode seen is Disconnect from computer, does charge. I have latest software of TTP, & Disk Warrior, & both, plus apple's disk utility, doesn't mount. the 20 gig hard drive iPod not shown, nor on iTunes.

The power from USB and FireWire use different voltage, so that questionable cable may have damaged some circuitry on the logic board, although the part that handles battery charging still works. And I think you're saying that when it's disconnected, it still works as an iPod (plays songs).

You've done the usual trouble-shooting steps. If you have a different FireWire cable, try it to rule out bad FireWire cable as the cause. Also, if you have another FireWire device (like an external drive), connect it to confirm the computer's port is working normally.

I would let it play songs unattended (disconnected) with headphones at normal volume (or higher), until it runs out of battery power. Then, keep trying to turn it on until nothing appears on screen anymore. Basically, make the battery completely dead. NOTE: You could open the case and disconnect the battery, but the 1st and 2nd gen iPods are harder to open and more prone to getting damaged, even if you use the proper tools. But if you know how and you've done it before, you can do that instead to save time.

Then, connect the iPod to see if there is any difference.

I understand, you want me reboot from iPod. Sounds like a good idea. i changed battery years ago, myself from OWC & have their pry plastic bar, but I can't find it. I did change the time, it works. I am now able to shut off iPod, I guess from dead battery, helped. I have extra heavy duty battery, but 3/4 till full, now. Firewire cable & sockets are good, because iSight camera & hard drives still work, on firewire. I thank you for your help. You are the only one answering me. I'll let you know if it works. it's the busy season time of year.
