Q: how do I activate iPhone calendar? The sign is grayed out.

I Was having trouble syncing the calendars on my iPhone 5s, with ios9.1. I eventually deleted my calendar with all its data. Now that I reinstalled it, I am unable to add entries since the + sign is grayed out. Also, under Show All Calendars, I only have Facebook birthdays, US Holidays, Birthdays and events found in mail. My iCloud and home calendars are missing. I have checked my settings and everything seems to be in order. i need help!

Thank you for your response. Fortunately, the issue resolved itself after about 4 hours of the phone sitting idle. Can't explain it, but I'm certainly glad it's working.
