Q: iMac G5 a1058 17" - upgrades - help needed

I Have a iMac G5 8,1 a1058, which I was given

i am awaiting delivery of a 2 gb ram upgrade and when I have fitted this I want to do a fresh factory install.

It has already had a leopard upgrade but  want to wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of leopard - I have 2 disks, one says install DVD, the other says upgrade dvd. It has already installed a bunch of software which I'm not bothered about keeping or can re-install later, but one I do want to keep is garage band as after the OS install I will installing Ableton 9.1 as this will primarily be used as a music maker( hence why I want to keep Garage Band.

I Have been told Garage Band came with ilife but  can't seem to find a disk or the original tiger disks that came with it.

SO here we go with the questions ..

Do I use the install dvd to format the new drive, then install leopard ?

How can I transfer iLife and specifically garage band  that is on the Mac now to the new install ?

I want to upgrade the 80gb drive fitted to at least 1tb preferably a hybrid ssd 7200 hard drive

will I need any sort of adapter  fit this 3.5 drive into the G5?

Is there any size limitations on the hard drive fitted?

Any recommendations as to brand?

I've just had my 2nd WD die on me so I'm avoiding them ! Seagate seems a reasonable option...

Thanks in advance

I would make sure that I have a current Time Machine backup before doing anything.

Then yes you would need to use the install DVD to format the drive. Then you can install the OS. After that, you can restore from the Time Machine backup as desired.

BTW, I have asked the moderators to move this discussion to the "iMac (PPC)" discussion area.

    Thanks Duane,

apologies for posting in the wrong area!

Will i ill I be able to select specific items from the time machine backup - ie Garage Band ?

Sadly ATM due to the WD my book dying I don't have another hard drive to back up to - only a 64gb pen usb drive

which I think may take an age to back up to !!

Can I just back up the apps for instance ?

Everything else can happily go back to factory

    thanks

The first thing that I would be doing is buying an external drive to do a complete backup of the hard drive. You can get either a USB or FireWire external drive.

I wouldn't put a new drive in a G5 iMac but it may be worth it to you. I would clone the existing hard drive to an external FireWire drive and use the external FireWire drive as the startup disk.

Only after I had a new working startup drive would I try to remove unneeded programs. If you try to do that now, you may push your drive to complete failure.

The drive works fine - it's just full. But good advice - I think there is a " clone copy"? Program already installed. I'll use that.

The thing I'm unsure about is can I reinstall garage band from the cloned rive when I install the new drive if I don't  have the original program install disk

    Thanks

If you clone the internal drive to an external drive. You can restore the entire drive by reversing the process at any time.

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore accidentally deleted files quite easily.

If you need disk space, get an external drive (separate from the backup drive) and move large libraries (photos or music) to this external drive.
