Disk Image options greyed out

Disk Image options greyed out

I am trying to create a disk image of my Macbook Pro's hard disk. In Disk Image I go to 'File / New' but the option Disk Image from "Macintosh HD" is greyed out. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Try booting into the Recovery Partition (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart) and see if you can create the image there.
