Q: How often if at all should I restart/power off the apple watch? Is there a benefit to occasional restarting? Is it necessary?

Just curious if the watch should be restarted occasionally or at all. Is there a benefit or a need?

Apple Watch, iOS 9.1

I have always restarted my devices, Macs, iPhone, and iPad, about once a week. Thus when I got a watch I restart it once a week. This stems from the PC days where so much stuff was running, that a restart sped it up.

I see no benefit in restarting an Apple watch unless it has experienced a problem.  I have two and have never restarted them (except after a software upgrade)  since I bought them some time long ago.  They are probably the most reliable pieces of Apple kit I have ever bought.

As per BertingAP's reply I only restart my iMacs/iPhone and iPads if they have 'crashed', which, unfortunately even Macs do.

    You may be right!

The weekly restart ritual stems from my pc days where a lot of junk would be running, which got cleaned off with a restart.

This is less so with Apples. however, when I went to an Apple technician about my watch (which was behaving oddly) he suggested a weekly restart was a good idea.

I had some touchscreen issues with WatchOS 1.0 - I noticed the taps getting more and more off until, at some point, I was unable to accurately hit the numbers for the unlock code... I then had to reset the watch by holding the crown and side button. Happened about every 10-14 days.

This seems to be fixed in OS 2.0, but the watch still gets noticeably slower over time. Especially the workout app that I use almost every day - last week it seemed really slow and laggy, so I restarted the watch and it was back to normal. Unfortunately, it only lasted a few days - now performance is deteriorating again. Apple, get to work on OS 2.1 or however you're going to call it...

I have had my  Watch since early June and have restarted it maybe three times. I only did a restart when some kind of glitch occurred which were probably software related. In any case I do not turn off my watch and only restart it when it displays a problem. The same goes for my iPhone and iPad.

No. Only if it crashes or you are experiencing problems.

I have found I have to restart the watch regularly. Sometimes the weather app or the e-mail app gets stuck or won't update, and when I went to the genius bar they restarted it, fixing the problem, and told me this is necessary regularly. Even my calendar was stuck on Dec 24, until I restarted the watch today. The technician at Apple suggested restart once a week.

So, restart the watch when you encounter a problem. I have been using the watch for about 6 months and have had to restart the watch, maybe once or twice, excluding when installing watchOS updates. If you are having recurrent problems you might wat to consider wiping the watch and reinstalling a fresh copy of watchOS and not from a backup.
