Q: Backed up iTunes library to external hard drive, opened iTunes using drive, now all my hard disk space is used up by 'other'

My iTunes library and all my media are successfully moved to my external hard drive. It must be plugged into my USB for iTunes to open and the location of the iTunes Media folder in iTunes preferences matches where it actually is on my drive. However, when I opened iTunes the first time with it, all the files downloaded (shown in the top menu bar) and now all my hard disk space on my computer is full. The filled space is designated as 'other' not 'music' and I can't find the files to figure out how to solve this.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

    Hello othererin,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are seeing your Mac HD filled with Other when you view the storage. To begin troubleshooting this situation, I would suggest re-indexing this volume. The instructions for completing this task can be found in the following article.

    Cheers!

    Joe_7399,

I tried your re-indexing suggestion, and now instead of seeing quite a bit of 'Other' as well as Photos, Apps, and Audio, I instead see 95% Other now and almost none of the other categories. So this seems to have made my problem worse and I still have no idea why I am out of disk space.

    Suggestions?
