Switch Control/touchscreen interoperability?

If I enable switch control on an iOS device to function with an external switch, does enabling switch control effectively disable standard use of the touchscreen? I would like to utilize an iPad as part of an educational exhibit. I want users of the iPad to be able to use the touchscreen to navigate through the educational app running on the device, but I also want users to be able to use an external switch to navigate through the educational app if needed. Any input would be appreciated.

A switch is a device that can be connected to an iOS device that enables people with certain disabilities to operate the iOS device without using the touchscreen. Using a switch requires Switch Control to be enabled on the iOS device. In my research, it appears that enabling Switch Control disables standard use of the touchscreen. But I am not certain about this because I have not been able to test it. My question is whether the touchscreen functions normally when Switch Control is enabled and has been configured to operate with an external switch.
