Q: Windows 10 install on MacBook Pro with fusion drive, GPT partition error

Per Loner T's request in Re: Windows 8.1 install on iMac with fusion drive, GPT partition error

I have a Mid 2012, 15" MacBook Pro with a "custom" Fusion drive, made from a 500gb Apple SSD and a 2tb Hard drive. I'm trying to install Windows 10 Enterprise using the Boot Camp Assistant, but I keep getting the GPT error within Windows. I tried formatting the partition to NTFS with the Windows installer, but the GPT error persists.

Here is my output from the commands:
diskutil list:
/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

You seem to have all the ingredients of a problem very well at hand.

Which drive are you trying  to install Windows on? Are you using a USB built by BCA? Can you run BCA and let it fail and provide the exact error message and leave the BCA partition intact as is?

Please also post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

Sorry, I had removed the Boot Camp partition when I did that.

I set it back up, and here is the info.

The boot camp partition should be 134.2 MB   disk0s3

Also, I am using a USB installer built by BCA.

Here is the drive info again and the disk1 info you requested!

    1. Are you using a USB Installer and selecting EFI Boot?

    2. Notice that you have output on Fdisk on disk1 which is an MBR. The EFI selection for W10 and the MBR on disk1 conflict and cause problems.

    3. Download GPT Fdisk - http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ - and I can provide the SIP and GPT steps to clear the MBR.

    4. You do not have a BC/Windows partition yet, so the MBR may come back, when BCA is run again and may need to be cleared again.

Ok, forgot to mention, when I reboot, and it tries to boot into the Windows installer, its gives a No Boot Disk Found -- Insert and press a key

Then I reboot, holding down "Option" and I'm selecting the EFI Boot. So, Yes, I am using the USB EFI Boot :-)

I have GPT Fdisk installed and ready to go! Just awaiting your commands! :-)

If I have to run BCA again that's no issue. I've worked this long on this problem, what's another few minutes!

    Thank you again!!

You have El Capitan, so we need to disable SIP.

    1. Boot into Local Recovery (Command+R).

    2. Start Utilities -> Terminal.

    3. Type csrutil disable in Terminal and press Enter/Return.

    4. Type csrutil status.

    5. Boot normally, and type csrutil status to confirm that all individual entries are still disabled.

Remove MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. GPT Fdisk uses single character commands. The text in "(...)" is for explanatory purposes.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    5. X (Expert menu)
    6. N (Create Protective MBR)
    7. O (Print MBR and verify)
    8. W (Write the new MBR)
    9. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    10. Reboot

Test your EFI Installation and post any error messages.

Oops, I said the wrong partition is the one I want to use.

I meant I want to use   4:       Microsoft Basic Data                         136.0 GB   disk1s4

So I'm guessing I would use Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk1

    Correct?

Alright, so I followed your instructions and used /dev/rdisk1

I held down Option, selected the USB EFI Boot

    Windows 10 installer starts.

Select the BootCamp drive, and format it NTFS (as required by Windows).

Then I get this error, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more informations, see the Setup log files."

Not sure what to do now, and I'm not sure where to find that log file.

    Any ideas?

Again, thank you VERY MUCH for all your help!

I have ONLY had the USB drive with the Windows 10 install connected. No other USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt, Ethernet connects.

I'll give the SMC and PRAM resets a try, and let you know!
