Dec 5, 2015 12:56 PM in response to Mirskyby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
Are your Facebook Chat and Facebook passwords the same ?
Is there any info about problems with the Chat server at Facebook ?
Have you enabled anything such as 2 Step Verification for your Facebook accounts ?

My Facebook Chat and Facebook passwords are the same. And I hadn't enabled 2 step verification as far as i know.
You were right to ask if the servers are down. I did find this webpage: http://downdetector.com/status/facebook-messenger. Other people seem to be having some issues too.

Dec 5, 2015 1:45 PM in response to Mirskyby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
I don't have Facebook so I can't tell you if they have their own Facebook Chat server info page (although like Apple there maybe a central page).
From the link you posted it looks like the numbers are unfortunately small. (less likely to be fixed quickly)

I just tried Goofy, the app recommended in that article. But I don't see a list of who is online which makes it barely useful.

Dec 9, 2015 11:48 AM in response to Mirskyby jlevi,We should fight this. I hate that I need to have WhatsApp and Messenger open in my browser, plus Hipchat and Messages on Messages, plus Skype... this is so ridiculous.

Dec 15, 2015 11:50 AM in response to Mirskyby Thomas Lillis Iv,Facebook "officially" deprecated (discontinued) Jabber support on July 13th 2015 but it kept working up until about two weeks ago. Perhaps someone forgot to shut off one of the servers. If the comments in the Facebook help forum are anything to go on we're not the only ones annoyed. Without the Jabber APIs there's no way for Messages to "talk" to the Facebook servers.

I'm old enough to remember when Facebook made a big splash about going to a standards based chat so you could 'use your favorite chat software'. There's been much supposition as to why they shut it off, some say it's a technical matter and others say a business decision. Alas, I wouldn't count on them turning it back on but stranger things have happened.
