Having trouble with iPhoto after updating to OS X El Capitan on my MacBook Pro. Am told I need to update iPhoto in order to open it(my photos did not transfer to the new photos) but when I try to update I am given the following message: Update not available for this Apple ID either b/c a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. I am on the same computer as I always use and never changed ID. Any thoughts??

If you are now running MacOS X 10.11.1 El Capitan, you need to install iPhoto 9.6.1. No other version of iPhoto is compatible. Software update does no longer work for iPhoto, because Apple is no longer selling iPhoto from the Mac App Store.
Try to update by reinstalling as described by Barney:

Thanks for your reply. Opened app store after moving iPhoto to trash but now iPhoto update not showing upon update or purchase page. I also did what Barney suggested but no hidden purchases button appeared in my account information page. So I am not sure how to get this new iPhoto.
Then take iPhoto back out of the Trash.

Which version of iPhoto do you currently have? If iPhoto does not show on your Purchases page, you probably did not buy it from the App Store or associate with your AppleID if it came preinstalled on your Mac. You need the help of Apple Support to make it possible to update. Only, Apple Support is usually reluctant to help to stay with iPhoto, because they want us to move on to the new Photos,app, Apple stopped the development of iPhoto and is now offering Photos as the successor.
