iPad Pro takes so much time to charge! Any tips?

Compared to my iPad Air 2, which would generally take between 2-3 hours to charge from 10-15% to 100%, my newish iPad Pro seems to take a very long time to charge using the same percentages. I began charging about 4 ½ hours ago and have gone from 13% to 42%.

I am user the actual wall adapter that came with the Air 2 and the USB to Lightening cable that is Apple certified made by iOrange-E , with the nylon-wrapped cord, as every Apple cable would twist and become useless. I have been using the same charger and cord for months with my Air 2 with no problems. Is there a difference between the charge adapter for the Pro and the Air 2? Has anyone else noticed a difference? This is making me crazy! I do not sleep long enough at night to fully charge this iPad!

Any help or solution?

On a positive note: I watched my first movie on this monster last week and was digging in my pack to find my beats earbuds but accidentally started the film and I had my first taste of four speaker. No need at all, unless you're in public, for other speakers, headphones, earbuds, etc. The film had every flavor of sound recording and massaging available. And it looked fantastic, as well.

Someone wrote that there should have been a "ProOS" written for this device. It clearly has more power underneath the hood for some more exotic features.

SIgh. Made it to 43%. This isn't acceptable. I hope that you guys or girls can come up with a simple fix for this... Because sending the machine back to Apple isn't the solution that I'm looking for!

Thanks,

Clinton

I got an iPad Pro about a month ago. I've been charging it for 1 night, 1 day, & 1 more night (turned off). I'm using the wall plug and cable that came in the box with it. I've tried other devices in the same wall socket and they all perform normally.

It started at 75%.

When I checked it last night before going to bed (after charging it for about 26 hours) it was at 80%.

This morning it is at 95%. That means it has increase 20% in about 34 hours.

It has not fully charged in 34 hours!

One of the reasons I decided to get an iPad was because Apple is supposed to make reliable devices that don't have glitches.

I'm very disappointed and angry.

I just bought my new iPad Pro on 24/12/2017. I had iPad Air 2 before. My new iPad has taken 11 hour’s to go from 22% to 46%. Have used plug & charger given with iPad. Have had it off not using it or with stuff running in background. Previous iPad took under 4hrs to fully charge. I use my iPad a lot as I’m disabled & rely on games etc on days I am confined to bed. I spent over £1,100 on this ensuring I had big screen with max storage space assuming it would charge at the same rate, or hopefully better, than my 2 year old tablet. I’m at the point of returning it & getting refund to opt for the Samsung tablet (which would mean replacing my iPhone with Samsung next month when contract is due to be renewed). Is this a common issue? Due to my genetic disability I sleep with my iPad playing tv series or films and while I keep it charging most of the time, there are times when I have to sleep in a different position (due to recurrent joint dislocations) which mean having iPad playing with no charge for 4-5hrs. This was more than possible with my 2yr old iPad Air (which took under 3hrs to fully charge in morning without using it) It seems this is impossible with new iPad. My question is, is poor charge rate common with new iPad (December 2017) as if it is not down to a faulty model I have no choice but to switch to Samsung. I cannot wait 8+ hour’s in the day when I need to use tablet for it to charge when I’ve had to have it playing tv series for 4-5hrs the night b4. As I said, with my old 2yr iPad I could put it on charge first thing in the morning & it would be fully charged before lunch. Am so disappointed with this. It wasn’t cheap and seems like it isn’t as good as my old iPad (which I am now using again to watch films/shows all night.

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

You might have a defective unit.

The 12.9 inch iPad Pro DOES take longer to charge, though.

It should charge from 5% to 80-85% in approx. 3-4 hours and charge to 100% in 5 to 5-1/2 hours.

It should NOT take 11-12 to charge the large iPad Pro.

Take it back to Apple and have them diagnose the iPad.

Since you've had this for less than 14 days, you could ask for another unit just in case the one you have is defective unit.

Is there a difference between the charge adapter for the Pro and the Air 2?

Yes. The iPad Air 2 uses a 10W power adapter. The iPad Pro uses 12W. Using the 10W adapter to charge the Pro is OK but it will take longer to charge. 4 1/2 to 5 hours is about normal – if you are not using it at the same time. "Using it" includes uploading any backups to iCloud while it appears to be asleep, which is both time-consuming and energy-intensive. To eliminate that uncertainty power it down.

Using the iPad while also charging it can have an effect much greater than the apparent 20% difference between the two power adapters. If (for example) 6W of power is required just to use it, that leaves a 12W power adapter 6W available to charge the battery: twice as long to charge it while in use vs. completely powered down.

If on the other hand you were using a 10W power adapter it would only leave 4W available to charge the battery: three times as long.

Those are gross approximations. The charging rate is not linear, and power consumption while in use varies tremendously depending on what it's doing.

By the way I don't mean that to sound as though I advocate powering it down routinely. After its initial iCloud Backup (if you do that) power consumption when you're not using it is minimal.

Is worth another $60-80 to save a couple of hours of charging?

I didn't think it was worth this much more just to save a couple of hours of charging.

Now, if the extra cost for the faster cable and power adapter would enable the iPad Pro to charge in two hours or less from 0% to 100%, then maybe it's worth the extra cost of the accessories.

As it is, I'd rather spend that kind of money on more useful accesories for my iPad Pro.

My opinion on this.

Well,

I use my iPads pretty much as a laptop replacement for many things.

I am on my iPad/s for hours at a time.

If you can keep it on the charger while using it, it will charge slower, but it will still charge.

Also, even though the newer iPads and, especially, the Pro models are much more powerful, you can still save battery life by shutting off all of the motion graphics and image effects, keeping some apps from updating in the background, editing Spotlight searches to apps I want it to search, setup notifocations for only those apps I need notifications for, etc., keeping screen brightness down to 50% or less or even below 80% or less depending on the condition of your eyesight.

So, there are ways to preserve battery life, so you do not have to always/constantly charge it from zero to 100%, which you shouldn't be doing anyways as constantly draining a lithium ion battery can shorten its life.

I only let my the batteries in my iPads discharge completely every two-three weeks.
