Where to organise/store/tag home movies etc

Can I ask where do people organise/store/tag their home movies? I'm (still) organising my photos, started in iPhoto, now use Photos for Mac and iCloud photo library. It's great to use iCloud photo library, I upgraded so get all my pictures stored, to me it's an additional backup to time machine, and my other cloud storage.

However what do people do with home movies? My camera does AVCHD 1080P video so they aren't small. Where or what should I do to be able to have a similar setup to Photos, whereby the ability to tag them for reference and easy locating them etc.

I don't think I can include them in Photos app, (if I convert them to mp4 as Photos doesn't seem to support AVCHD), as it would just use all the iCloud space up. I'll somehow have to back these up manually to my online cloud service and time machine.

So this must be a common issue, can I ask for recommendations, and actually what scenarios others do to archive, store, backup, tag etc please.

Thanks

Anyone else help me with where, what, at least recommendations?

At the moment as I want everything backed up I'm converting AVCHD video from my Panasonic TZ40 to M4v and adding them to Photos. Trouble is its eating up space, and the conversion will be deteriorating the original which once I have (if ever) time I'll do light edits in iMovie (joining, little cutting, judder correction)

thanks

Thanks for input, but this is the confusion, you're using 3 apps for them. Do you convert them into mp4 or something when adding to Photos? What app do you use?

I'm using three applications, because I have three different uses for the videos.

  • Basically all movies are stored in iMovie -- the original clips I am importing from my cameras and the iPhone. But since the original clips are not fit to be watched - they need trimming and stabilizing, I import them to iMovie for editing. The iMovie library is an a large external drive. From the clips I create a movie for each vacation, with titles, transitions, and a sound track, and this video I export to iTunes as the central place were I am storing all finished movies.
  • In Photos I am keeping a few short clips - I am using them like life images to make my slideshows more interesting.

But the central place to work with video clips and create movies is iMovie and my video clip library on an external drive. Occasionally I export clips to Final Cut Pro for more advanced effects.
