can't discover mouse even with new batteries

I'm unable to sync my Apple mouse with my Mac. I have replaced the batteries and ensured the mouse is turned-on by the Mac is unable to discover the wireless mouse. Any suggests that would enable my Mac to allow my wireless mouse to be discoverable?
