Q: No devices will update apps iOS9

For the past 3 weeks, I cannot get any of my iOS 9 devices to update any apps.  iPad Air and iPhone 6 all say Update Requested for iOS9.1  but nothing happens.  I have 47 apps on my iPad and 35 on my iPhone that need to be updated and I  have selected items singly and Update ALL but nothing moves.

I have forced restarted my iPhone and iPad and nothing works.

In addition, I get about 15 messages a day wanting me to re-verify my login info on my phone.   This is getting ridiculous and I am 95% ready to move to a Samsung Galaxy. I'm tired of all this BS.  Also, they have made these community support forums almost impossible to find on the website.

Steve Jobs is dead and it SHOWS.  I've been a user of Macs since 1985 but I'm just about done with them.

This is a user to user support forum. Apple does not participate here. So, threats to change to Samsung fall on deaf ears, and really do not encourage anyone here to answer your question any faster, since your personal choice is phones is completely up to you. It does not influence my choice in devices.

Since you are receiving messages to check your iTunes login credentials, that is what is leading to your update issues. Have you done any other troubleshooting except to force restart the iPhone and iPad? If not, then the next steps are restore from backup, restore to factory. You can also attempt to log out of the iTunes store and then log in again.

I got a note from tech support that this problem is known but is usually fixed by the update to 9.1     That isn't helping because the updates for all devices are saying  Update requested but never progress to a download. I changed my apple password today to see if that might force a realignment, but it did not. Since updating to 9.02 my wife and both have had similar issues.  Her iTunes/Apple ID keeps requesting verification every 15 minutes.   I'm seeing the same behavior. It seems like the issue isn't with my phones but with a glitch in the apple software server....

Despite the number of apps I have on my iPhone and iPad, I've not witnessed this behavior and I've used all versions of iOS 9, and am currently on iOS 9.1 on my iPhone 6s and iPad Mini. As suggested earlier, I would restore the device to your last backup and then you should be able to sync and update your apps. While it may be a server glitch, no one I know has experienced it around here. We have 8 different devices, and no one I know with iOS devices has reported the issue either.

This might make sense if it were only one device, but it is happening on my iPad, my iPhone and now on my iTunes on my desktop. Everything says it is Updating, but there is NO progress being made.  I checked to make sure my credit card info was up to date, and it is.

I realize my connection is only 10/1, but still..this hasn't been a problem before.

Whether it makes sense or not, that is what I am seeing on my end. If you do not want to do any additional troubleshooting, that is up to you. Good luck with your devices then.

I have a case with tech support.  I'll let you know if they have an alternate suggestion.  You may not have experienced it before, but that doesn't mean "no one" has. In fact, my tech support said she had heard of this happening before and it was fixed with the 9.1 upgrade.

I never said it did not happen and was not happening to you. I just said I had not experienced it and provided you with troubleshooting steps.

Okay, Tech Support had the fix...  Apparently with slower Wifi connections (10/1 burst wireless internet) a disconnect or interruption of the connection can stall/stop all pending updates.   The fix on iOS is to go into Settings>General>Reset>Network Settings. Apparently the disconnect can corrupt the internal settings to iTunes/App Store/Apple.

    On the Mac Laptop:  restart

On a Mac Desktop. Turn off, unplug ethernet, turn on and plug ethernet cord back in will reset the network settings.

My "fix" only worked for 5 minutes.  Problem returned.    However, problem is now acknowledged by Apple:

iOS 9.2 + MDM apps = bad things?

Apple has published a knowledge base article identifying a problem with the iOS 9.2 update released last week:

If apps don‘t finish installing using Mobile Device Management (MDM) and iOS 9.2

When you use Mobile Device Management (MDM) to install an app in iOS 9.2, the installation might not finish.

This can happen if the MDM server requests the list of managed apps on the device before the installation is complete. Other MDM commands to your device will succeed unless they are behind an incomplete installation. To resolve the issue, clear the MDM server queue of any of the following commands:

    • Installing or updating apps (InstallApplication)
    • Returning the list of managed apps (ManagedApplicationList)

Apple plans to resolve this issue in a future software update.

MDM providers I spoke with today said the 9.2 update is causing "havoc" with customers. Note that Apple is still signing iOS 9.1, so updated devices can still be downgraded.

The (non-NDA protected) Developer portal today listed iOS 9.2.1. No public word yet on whether 9.2.1 fixes this MDM issue. (But I would wager it does.
