Upgrade Imovie 09 to 10.1

HI, If this has been answered or in the wrong forum please direct me to the right place. Thanks

I am just getting into making videos. I have Imoive 09 and updated to El Capitan. I have a Macbook pro mid 2009 running 2.66GHz Intel core 2 Duo. Memory is at 8GB. Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9400m 256Mb.

My question is that iMovie 09 is running very slow and freezes on me. Since I have to pay the $16 bucks to upgrade to iMovie 10.1, Will this fix imoive from freezing and crashing on me? Ever since I got El Captian, thats when my issues started. Im kind of frustrated and want to down grade, but because Im not good with computers I do not think I have a backup of my old OS X. Thanks for any help.

For a free upgrade from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10, iMovie 9 has to have been registered on your Apple ID. The age of the computer is not important. Be aware that iMovie 10 is radically different from iMovie 9. I think that it is an overall improvement but many don't, mainly because support for some cameras and "older ways of doing things" has been dropped.

I think you know this already, but just to be sure.

The iMovie 9 that Geoff is referring to ( ver 9) is not the same as your iMovie 09 ( ver 8).

So yes, your statement about having to pay for version 10 is correct.

Your Mac probably came with install discs ,so in theory, you might be able to get back to your operating system prior to El Capitan,

but I would not know how to advise on this.

Only do this if you receive proper guidance, as there are some pitfalls that can be made, and I would not want you to lose any of your stuff.

In short, it may be easier to buy iMovie 10.

Agree.

Installing an earlier operating system from instal disks is straightforward but restoring current data to earlier versions of Apple applications like Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, can be very complicated because Apple often changes the way the data is stored by the application in new versions of the OS. Transfer from an earlier to a later version is always provided for but the reverse is not.

GoPro Hero4 is listed as supported by iMovie 10.1 (iMovie supported cameras - Apple Support).

Although I don't use iMovie much now I am finding the latest version (10.1) is very stable in El Capitan.
