Time Capsule - "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBIOS is enabled and try again (53)"

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 PC to a Time Capsule and getting the following error:

"Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBIOS is enabled and try again (53)"

I have already enabled NetBios on Windows 7, but the message persists.

Time capsule is working properly and I am being able to use as a internet router and connect via iPad/iPhone.

I have already done a hard reset on time capsule and no luck. TimeCapsule and Windows 7 are updated to the latest versions.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks for the response ....

Yes. I have downloaded AirPort Utility for Windows. Just to be sure, I have removed and reinstated. Still the same error.

If I type the time capsule IP or name on explorer I get a message that windows cannot access it.

Strange enough, the AirPort Utility software know a time capsule is connected to the network, as it prompts me for a password. The issue occurs right after I type the password, resulting on the same message mentioned on the first post.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, windows can be difficult.

Is this over wireless or ethernet??

I would prefer you to test over ethernet if that is possible and you are using wireless.

The blockage is then generally caused by windows itself.. it does not generally like Time Capsules..

Open the network centre and make sure the computer is set to home.. not work or public location.

If that is correct and still doesn't work.. turn off the firewalls.. note you can have several firewires.. eg an anti-virus software can have inbuilt firewall as well as the standard MS one.. Turn them all off.

Check that you can ping the TC at its home address from a command window.

Ping must work for network connections to work.

Did you upgrade to win10 and then restore back to your earlier version of windows??

If so I think all kinds of strange stuff can happen.

If it is really important to you reinstall windows from scratch.. clean install.

But I doubt it is worth the pain.

You can try a few of the TCP/IP reset commands..

Personally I would move off the TC for windows.. it is not worth the pain.. Buy a USB drive.. format it NTFS and use that.. if you need to copy files around the network.. that is a bit harder.. but do not be surprised at issues.. I have recently been seeing win X issues and I have to confess.. I am glad I do NOT do PC support anymore.

No. I had Windows 7 and installed a new HD on the laptop. I restore the old windows 7 from the DVDs created for backup the system when acquired this laptop. After the restore, I did all windows update (about 200) and tried to access the TC via AirPort Software. This is where the issue started.

I have not experimented with Windows 10 yet.

I tried the link you suggested but no luck. Still the same error. Still no hint on what is causing as the AirPort Utility can see the disks and the ping is working fine.

I agree Microsoft and TC are not good friends. The problem is that I just want to access my files on the TC as I used it for backup of my computer, but clearly it has shown not be a wise choice to do Windows backup on an Apple product. Looks like the solution would be find a new computer just to access and rescue the files ... problem is I don't want to get a new computer just for that.

You have me stumped.. I am not sure why this is happening.

Which model TC is this?

I can certainly get to your files if you are prepared to pull the hard disk. But for the tower AC model I would not recommend that. They are too delicate.. The earlier ones can easily be opened and the cables etc are tough.

The other way to do it is a Mac.. I am guessing you don't have one. Could you get a friend with a Mac laptop to help you.. They can just plug a USB drive into the Mac.. formatted FAT32 and copy all your files from the TC to that.

I would factory reset the TC and do the following. I have modified this for windows environment.. Factory reset of the TC will not harm your files.

Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer Windows in your case. Unless you have iOS product like ipad and you can run setup from the airport utility for iOS.

In your case from windows definitely use ethernet .. so the wireless side is of less importance.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics. Don't change the disk password.. leave it default which is public.

3. From windows make sure the disk access is turned on for guest. Full read and write. By default you should find it off.. This is screenshot from Mac but is using v5.6.1 utility.

User uploaded file

Change that guest access to full read and write.

User uploaded file

Make sure the workgroup name is correct .. it should be WORKGROUP for windows 7 but double check.

4. In the computer do use Homegroup.. which is IPv6.. in later TC having IPv6 on can help.. so try it this way first on the computer.. If it doesn't work and especially if it is older TC.. turn off homegroup and actually uncheck IPv6 from the network configuration of the PC network card.

Thanks LaPastenague. For the record, my TC is the old model with 2Tb (not the tower one).

Following your previous advice (and seems to be the quickest way by now to solve) I decided to restart from scratch and reinstall windows. Also because I noticed that i could access via browser running windows on safe mode.

After I did that, I first installed the time capsule (even before doing all past windows updates) and it worked perfectly like before. Even with a long name for the time capsule (instead the short 8 letters).

Having done that, I slowly started uninstalling bloatware and installing my basic software suite. Rebooting every time to check if TC was still mapped.

After some time I found the evil do-er, it was Avast. Right after I installed Avast anti-virus I start having the same message: "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBIOS is enabled and try again (53)". Again, I turned all Avast protections off and the error persisted. Decide to uninstall Avast and TC started to work as good as before.

Very strange as I had disable everything on Avast before and it did not fix. Probably something to do with its installation, which is also strange, as I was running Avast with the original windows installation and never bump into this issue.

I am still mid process on installing everything back, but I will report back if something derail.

Lessons learned: 1) Guess now is the best time to stop using those pesky anti-virus and 2) Never again I will use a TC as a windows backup solution.

Well done..

I used to always use AVAST .. it had a dos boot virus check .. back in XP... that was excellent..

I must admit at vista I decided enough was enough and turned over to Mac OS.. I still do a bit of PC work.. which helps nip in the bud any dissatisfaction with later Mac OS.. Software comes and goes.. and later versions of AVAST are known to cause trouble.. it is so hard to keep up with the virus writers in windows..

You certainly cannot use no anti-virus in windows like we do in Mac.. but you probably need to pay for a decent one.

I also do recommend using a standard USB with NTFS format so that you can easily recover.. if you do want to use network backups then a decent NAS that really speaks PC-Windows network.

Anyway you persevered and that is the winning combo.. never say die.. just keep bashing away and mostly you will win.
