Hi mkstretch,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that your Apple TV is experiencing an issue where it sometimes goes black while using a couple of different apps.

I know this can be frustrating, especially with a new Apple TV, but there are some steps I would like you to try to begin troubleshooting. Please read over and work through both the Before you begin and If you can't hear audio or if you see a blank or distorted screen, static, or flickering sections from the following article.

Before you begin

Check the connections between your Apple TV and other devices:

  1. Firmly connect all the cables between your Apple TV, TV, and receiver.
  2. Make sure that you plugged your Apple TV into power.
  3. See if the light on your Apple TV is on. If it isn't on, press a button on your remote to wake your Apple TV.
  4. Make sure that your TV and receiver are on.
  5. Restart your Apple TV.

If you still need help, use the steps below for your issue.

If you can't hear audio or if you see a blank or distorted screen, static, or flickering

Check your connections and adjust your video and audio settings:

  1. Make sure that you select the HDMI input on your TV that matches the HDMI port that connects your Apple TV. Check your TV's user guide for help.
  2. If you're using an HDMI switch or receiver, connect your Apple TV directly to your TV.
  3. Try using a different HDMI cable.

For video issues, you can also try adjusting the HDMI and display settings on your Apple TV and TV. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Audio and Video. If the screen is blank and you can’t go to Settings, you can still use your remote to change the resolution.

  • Apple TV (4th generation): Hold Menu and Volume Down for five seconds.
  • Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation): Hold Menu and Up for five seconds.

After you let go of the buttons, your Apple TV will change to a new resolution every 20 seconds. Select OK to choose a resolution or select Cancel to quit.
