Query by serial number
Apple's warrenty database will identify the type of Mac you have. Your serial number is securely sent. Provides more information for newer machines.

This site provides more information. Best for older machines. Note, serial number is sent in the clear.
"A serial number is a unique, identifying number or group of numbers and letters assigned to an individual piece of hardware or software. It's used for various things depending on the product / brand but what is your Mac's serial number for and more importantly... what is it hiding and what can it do for you ?"

This site provides more information, but lacks security too.

Dec 6, 2015 2:27 PM in response to rccharlesby 900007,MY machine is a iMac core 2 duo 2.8 24" early 2008 4gb ram
The machine would not boot up. It would come up with the apple log followed by the rotating pin wheel that would stop And screen will turn gray from the top down.
wiped the drive clean with a mac lap top with target drive via FireWire cable.
tried to reinstall original OSX cd 10.5.4 and always get the issue of the apple log followed by a stoping pin wheel and turn to a gray screen starating from the top down.
The same thing will happens when I try to install mac OSX leopard 10.6.1
after this gave up and tried installing MS windows 7 and it did not have any problems. Completed windows install with boot camp and it is working perfectly.
however I would like to get back to the original or any other apple operating system version.
also ran hardware diagnostics from original cd and it tells me everything is ok.
I am puseled why it would work on windows and not on OSX.
any help for some one that is not a tech would be appreciated.
thanks.

did this machine ever work for you with Mac OS X? What is the history of the machine? Did you buy it new? What OS was on it when you got it?
Did it ask what partition you wanted to put x on? You have an external drive you could try to install the os on?
Why did you format the disk on another machine.? You should be able to format from the install dvd. Look under utilities.
How did you format the disk? Maybe it's formatted wrong.
You can look in system profiler to see what partitioning scheme was used my internal drive has... correct GPT.

Dec 6, 2015 4:40 PM in response to rccharlesby 900007,Yes, it worked with Apple OS X.
i Am the original owner of this machine that worked fine until a few months ago. The OS X that it has been operating under is 10.5.4 and I still have the original cd that came with the machine and that is what I am trying to use to load OS again. No it did not ask to what partition to put the X on because can never get to that point. As I said it gets to the top to bottom gray screen and get a message box to turn power on and restart to install OS.
i Formatted the drive with target drive because that was the only way I could access it. I could format from the install disc because I could only get to the gray screen as mentioned before.
I Can not get to utilities because the install disc all it does is bring me to the gray screen.
disc was formatted from a apple lap top connected by FireWire in target mode.
thanks

Dec 7, 2015 10:18 AM in response to 900007by BDAqua,How about if you try Target Mode the other way with this Mac's Install Disc in the other Mac & hold option or alt key booting this Mac?

Dec 7, 2015 4:22 PM in response to BDAquaby 900007,Dear BDAqua, thanks for this suggestion.
just tried it.
I did put my lap top on target mode, inserted the install cd in the lap top cd drive and started my I mac pressing the option key. it recognized the cd drive on the lap top and I clicked on the icon on my screen for it and the apple log came on followed by rotating pin wheel (rotated for about 45 seconds) with noises coming out of the lap top cd drive telling me that it was reading something. Shortly after the pin wheel stopped spinning and a gray screen came up starting from the top and going all the way to the sreen bottom. Once the screen was completely gray it had a message box telling me to reboot again by holding the power button for 20 sec and them start again.
in conclusion it acts the same way as before.
it is strange that windows loaded on the machine works perfectly.
Thanks for everyone's assistance. Don't really know what else to do.

Dec 7, 2015 6:03 PM in response to 900007by rccharles,So you can read data on the cd in the other mac?
I suggest running whatever hardware dvd you have. Some mac only hardware failing?
Sell it to Microsoft as a machine that prefers Windows over OS X. It's sure is a collectors item.

Dec 7, 2015 6:53 PM in response to 900007by Limnos,An observation: Posting in the correct forum will get you more people familiar with your setup. OSX 10.5 is Leopard, not Tiger.
