Turn Personal Hotspot On on the iPhone first.

Then on the Apple Tv go to Settings->General->Network and look for your iPhone's name there.

Select it to connect to it, and provide the password you set for it in Personal Hotspot.

If you use Personal Hotspot, you will not be able to AirPlay content from the Phone to the Apple Tv. Instead the Apple Tv will use the Phone's internet connection to stream media directly.

My recent test with a 2d generation apple tv and new iPhone 6 confirms that the apple TV will recognize and use the hotspot from the iPhone. However I have a broader question about using Apple TV in our RV. Very infrequently we're at an RV park with adequate WiFi. More frequently we're in areas where cell coverage is available -- though not always LTE. Other times no WiFi/no cell coverage. My assumptions are:

1. I could easily use Apple TV fully where either we had a good WiFi connection for both devices; or where we had an adequate cell signal that would let me use Apple TV through the iPhone hotspot.

2. I "think" (but don't know) that I could make limited use of Apple TV via airplay and mirroring to Apple TV even where we had no WiFi and no or limited cell coverage. Some features, like viewing tex pix and movies would still be possible. Or would they?

In the context of RV travel, this is all becoming quite important, because to get TV on the road (beyond what may or may not be available over the air) an adequate WiFi or cell signal can increasingly provide a range of TV channels. Of course to the extent one relies on a cell signal, data usage can mount up pretty quickly. But some the plans would handle a reasonable amount of this type of data use. If anyone's had any experience that confirms or refutes these assumptions, I'd be most appreciative. Tom

When it comes to RV or hotel use, I would strongly recommend just using the HDMI dongle for your iPhone direct to the TV. I have found that the campground wifi is limited at best and can be more frustrating than necessary when your traveling and just want to relax. We fought with the ATv3 in the RV a few years ago and then just went to the dongle approach with a long cable and haven't looked back. But we still use the ATV at the cabin and at our home just not in the RV or hotels...

and as for the data use, your right, it can eat up very quickly! Netflix consumes about 3gb per hour if watching HD. Not sure what streaming providers you want to use or how much you plan on using but be aware of cellular provider throttling if you have unlimited. They may give you all the data you can download but may turn down the spigot if you use a lot which would then cause excessive buffering. we generally use the antennae for off air reception. But we also have a large personal library on an external hard drive connected to the MacBook and just use the HDMI cable to the tv.
