Dec 5, 2015 9:31 PM in response to Kyle Goodby FriedWaffle,Do you have FileVault encryption turned on by any chance?

Dec 5, 2015 9:35 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,I don't think so, at least I've never heard or seen it before. I'm not ble to log into my normal account, the guest account appears. But in the guest account I only have access to Safari.

Dec 5, 2015 9:43 PM in response to Kyle Goodby FriedWaffle,From what I can tell, this sort of issue usually crops up when FielVault is involved. Are there any other accounts on your computer? If not, the only other option I can think of at the moment is to hook it up to another Mac using Target Disk Mode in order to fuss with it. If this isn't an option, and given the urgency of your request, you may want to look into finding an Authorized Service location and bring it in.

Dec 5, 2015 9:49 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,The ony other account on my computer is the guest account. I tried to hard reboot my Hard Drive to clean it or repair it and it really isn't working. I have an external hard drive but I never backed up my files on it..

Dec 5, 2015 9:52 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,If I was to backup my computer now to the external hard drive, do you think this problem would be carried over to it? I mean I don't even know how this all started. I was using Firefox and watching Netflix when firefox stopped responding. So I had to forcefully turn off my computer and in doing so slowed things down but I was able to log into my acount. Then someone recommended going into safe mode and afterwards I was never able to get back nto my account. It now appears with "Update Needed" under my username. THank you again for taking the time to help!

Dec 5, 2015 10:17 PM in response to Kyle Goodby FriedWaffle,The problem would likely be carried over. If you have an external hard drive big enough, you certainly should back it up before we try to fix anything, just in case something goes haywire. If you can boot into the recovery partition of your computer, we should be able to do everything we need there.
To back it up,
- Boot into the recovery partition by holding down Command-R while you turn on the computer, and don't release them until you see the apple logo.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Plug in your external drive (make sure it is large enough.)
- Select the indented partition (called "Macintosh HD" by default).
- Click the Restore tab.
- Make sure that "Macintosh HD" is in the Source field, then drag the external hard drive to the Destination field.
NOTE: This will completely erase the external hard drive and replace the contents with an exact duplicate of your computer's hard drive, so make sure ther eis no important data on your external hard drive.
7. Click the Restore button.
To unlock your hard drive (back it up first, if you can):
NOTE: If you find that the disk is not locked, as I am expecting it to be, reply to this thread and we'll figure something else out.
- Boot into the recovery partition by holding down Command-R while you turn on the computer, and don't release them until you see the apple logo.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select the Disk that is indented, it will be "Macintosh HD" by default, unless it was renamed for some reason.
- Under the File menu, click on Unlock "<disk name>" and enter your password when prompted.
- After unlocking the disk, click Verify Disk and repair them if necessary.
- Then click Verify Disk Permissions and repair them if necessary.
- Restart your computer and attempt to log in.
(Watching Netflix? Finals are next week? Tsk tsk. )
Edited to add directions for backing up the disk, like I suggested. (silly me.)

Dec 5, 2015 10:23 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,Haha yeah I know, finals stress me out and netflix is the antidote. And yeah that's what I was doing with the Command+R. The external harddrive is definately big enough, it has 1.5 Terabytes of room left and my computer is only taking up 500 G. So that's not a problem, but I don't have my ext harddrive saved anywhere else. I know what is on it isn't as important as the computer itself, but is there anyway I can copy over the contents of my computer to the ext harddrive without replacing it? If not, then I have to go ahead and o it regaurdless if it's going to save my files. The only problem with what is above is that in step 6, verify disk permissions never let me click on it. I was able to click on verify disk then repair, and I don't belive any problems came up. I'll try that again right now to confirm, then I'll log back into the guest account to let you know!

Dec 5, 2015 10:38 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,Hey so I was able to get as far as trying to restore the Mac HD to the External Hard drive. I received the message "Recovery Partition Restores can only be done on GPT Maps". Does that mean I need to change the partition of the External hard drive?
-
Dec 5, 2015 10:41 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,Would it be possible to make a seperate partition inside of my ext hard drive to accomidate the Macs information, and still be able to keep my files on the external hard drive? I know that's probably wishful thinking, but it'd be nice to keep the content.

Dec 5, 2015 10:56 PM in response to Kyle Goodby FriedWaffle,Actually, i just remembered another way to copy your startup disk. Don't worry about making another partition on your external drive. Instead, select the startup disk and click New Image at the top of the window, then choose to save the image to the external drive. I'd recommend saving it as a Read/Write format, just to be safe.

Dec 5, 2015 11:08 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,Okay I just saved the new image to the external hard drive. What now? Do I click on the apple icon in the top left corner?

Dec 5, 2015 11:09 PM in response to Kyle Goodby FriedWaffle,That was fast. How big does it say the image is?
