Dec 6, 2015 1:55 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,You will have to go to recovery and use terminal to turn it off. Here is a link that tells you the commands to see if it's on and to turn it off. http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2014/01/check-enable-and-disable-filevault-from- terminal.

Dec 6, 2015 1:58 PM in response to FriedWaffleby Kyle Good,So I was able to finlly get tot where it said turn off encryption for the Mac HD and it did mention the Firevault in my settings. You were right about that. So I guess now I go into safe mode and go into settings to turn it off?

Dec 6, 2015 2:00 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,Hey sorry, thanks for the help. What exactly does that mean? Does that imply that I can read the material on my ext hard but not be able to write anything to it? As in I can't restore my Mac HD to it? I was attempting that after I unlocked and tried to turn off the encryption of the MAc HD I then tried to restore the contents of the Mac HD to the ext hard. It allowed my to click the restore button, but nothing really showed that it was loading..

Dec 6, 2015 2:13 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,Yes. As long as the partition is Master Boot Record. If you want to install your mac files on it you will need to erase and the make one partition setting it as a GUID partition and then click apply. Using the disk utilities. The partition scheme would be GUID with Mackintosh extended journaled. If you are able to get back into your Macbook to the startup volume. Then you could use the external drive for backup using time machine.

Dec 6, 2015 2:46 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,Okay I just changed the partition to GUID and moved enough room for the Mac HD. Now do I try to restore it?? And the format for the Mac Back Up is extended (Journaled).
I did try to restore the Mac HD onto the ext hard drive, but it is telling me input/output error??

Dec 6, 2015 3:36 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,You should be able to go to recovery and select install or reinstall. Follow the instructions and when you get to the install pick the external hard drive. It should show up along with the internal drive.

Dec 6, 2015 3:40 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,When in restore I have never had to unlock the internal drive. What exactly did you do? Did it say in get info read only

Dec 6, 2015 5:38 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,Hey sorry it's taken me so long to reply!! In Disk utilities I thought you were talking about installing OS X Yosemite so I installed that onto my external hard drive. It just finished up and I am running a new account through the external. Mac HD is still on my lap top so now I am trying to acquire it and copy it to the external hard drive.
In response to your other message, I don't know if I have to unlock the internal hard drive. I think it said read only when I was in the Desk Utilities earlier, but I'm not sure sorry.

Dec 6, 2015 6:02 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,If the internal drive is set to read only, you can after you get the external drive up and running, access the internal drive . After booting from the external drive you should also see the internal drive on the desktop. If you right click on it a box will open and you can click on the get info. This will open another long column box. down at the very bottom it will tell you the privileges you have. Should say/ system read & write/ admin read & write/ everyone read only.If it does not click on the padlock inter your user name and password and change it so it does.

Dec 6, 2015 7:11 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,Well crap, I was able to do all that that you listed but Apple told me to use Migrate or something like that so I could transfer my Mac HD to my external hard drive. Now I am stuck on a transfer screen but nothing is happening. Sorry it's taking so long to reply, I was going to give the transfer a shot. But now it doesn't look like it's going anywhere. When my comp is downloading, I'm using my phone to see your posts, but I can't reply to them for some reason.. I think I have to redownload OS X correct?

Dec 6, 2015 7:19 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,Hey man I'm sorry, thank you for being so patient. I have to redownload the OS X onto my external so it'll take me an hour and a half to redo that. Thanks again. When I'm done with that I'll let you know

Dec 6, 2015 7:33 PM in response to Kyle Goodby my ginger,OK. Did you ever see the internal hard drive when you booted from your external drive? To use migration assistant you would have need to open the utilities folder on the internal drive. go thru the startup and setup procedure and when asked for a target drive, you select the external drive. Did you ever use the get info on the internal drive to see if the read and write permissions were correct, when you booted from the external drive. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

Dec 6, 2015 9:59 PM in response to my gingerby Kyle Good,I'm back sorry! I don't know why that took so much longer to download than the first time.
Alright so I did see the internal HD (MacHD) when I'm booting from my external HD. It's not on the desktop, I found it in the finder. I'm going to go ahead and do what you said earlier, right click on it to see the "get info" and figure out what privileges I have.
