My hard drive is not showing up in os x Snow Leopard installer

I own a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. A few days ago I started it up as usual and it it did its usual loading bar. But when the loading bar was finished the screen went black with a little loading symbol. I left it for ages and it still continued. I decided after extensive research to get out the old OS X Snow Leopard install disc and try to boot the computer off that. The Snow Leopard loading screen went for way longer than usual and finally, after about fifteen minutes, it loaded the installer. I selected the language and it went to the "Select which disc you want to install Mac OS X on" page. But my hard drive wouldn't show up!!!

Please help Me!

I hope you have a backup. Open Disk Utility and see if the hard drive shows there. If so, run repair disk until you get no errors. Try the install again. If that doesn't work, reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

Thanks!!! 😁 This worked first time. I am now happily updating from snow leopard to around Mavericks (not a huge fan of yosemite). But thanks heaps for your answer!! Was a huge help. (I have been doing my work on an old powerbook).
