OS X Server 5.X - limit home folder users on External Disk

Hi everyone

I have a Mac Mini Server Server 5.0.15 (Build 15S4033) with OS X 10.11.1 (Build 15B42) administered with Open Dirctory

And everything works fine.

the Problem:

When the users' home directory is on the primary partition on the system

For example:

/ Users / <HomeFolder>

I can make the volume limiting user "limit disk Usage to"

Except for SMB Protocol

When I change the home directory location to an external disk (disk experience there are currently FW)

For example:

/ Volume / Test / Users / <HomeFolder>

I can not make the restriction of the user volume "Lilmit Usage to disk"

question:

1. Is there a problem restricting the volume that uses the SMB protocol at all?

2. Is it possible to make limited user capacity on a different partition which is not a primary partition?

Thank you for your help.

1. Is there a problem restricting the volume that uses the SMB protocol at all?

I will admit that I will not use SMB for network homes. Let's just say I've been burned in the past and even if El Cap's SMB fixes everything I remain traumatized. So I will admit that I do not have a definitive answer on if a limitation exists.

2. Is it possible to make limited user capacity on a different partition which is not a primary partition?

So that answer should be yes. On a test system I replicated your environment by creating a NetHome folder on the root of an external drive (also Firewire). I defined a user and set a quota for the account. Doing so created the appropriate quota files on the root of the external drive (/.quota.ops.user and /.quota.user). Setting the value low (500 MB), I logged in as the user and quickly generated enough files to trigger the quota alert.

Here are some things to check:

• See if the system is reporting quotas:

sudo repquota -a

• Try enabling quotas on the external volume (logically they should be on, but...)

sudo quotaon /Volumes/Bmac_4TB

This was tested using AFP as the protocol. Hope this helps.

Hi

Thanks for your response

Before entering the commands you wrote I checked things again.

It seems to be only display problem on the external disk and user volume limit(user on the root disk i don't have display problem).

When I limited the 500mb and I started a file transfer over 500MB I got an error message.

question:

Do you know if i can fix it?

Thank you for your help.

I am not sure what you mean here:

It seems to be only display problem on the external disk and user volume limit(user on the root disk i don't have display problem).

see attached image:

Do you mean that it shows 1.96 TB of available space? That is volume capacity. This is not linked to the disk quota.

Based on the second screen shot, the quota is enforced on the external volume?
