iMovie icon in Applications trying to open v10 even though I have v10.1 installed

I am a pretty new Apple user so please excuse me if this is an easy question...

In my Applications folder on my MacBook Pro I have an icon for iMovie with a circle and a slash through it. I have tried unsuccessfully to uninstall it. When I click on it, I am taken to an error message that says I need to upgrade to iMovie 10.1. I have actually already done this and it shows up in my Purchased Applications. How do I get this icon to link me to the correct version of iMovie 10.1?

Thank you in advance.

" I have an icon for iMovie with a circle and a slash through it."

This normally means the application is not compatible with the current operating system. Is this the only iMovie application in your Applications folder? What operating system version are you using?

If you go to your purchased applications in the App Store and look to the right of the iMovie item what does it say? "Instal" or "Open"

Thanks for your help Geoff.

I have an icon for iMovie in my Applications folder and it is the one that tries to open the v10 of iMovie and tells me I need to upgrade. I also have a folder labeled iMovie 9.0.9 that is just a folder icon, not the star with the movie camera in it. When I go into this folder I do have an iMovie icon (with the star and the camera) that is purple and another one that is black and gold and labeled iMovie '11 9.0.9. I am really just trying to clean these up so I only have one program.

I am using OS X El Capitan 10.11.1. When I go to the App Store and purchased apps I have iMovie with the purple icon (v10.1) and to the right it says Open.

Thanks again!

The separate folder with iMovie 9.0.9 in it (iMovie 9 icon is black and gold) is normal when you update from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. The iMovie 10 application (icon is purple) should be directly in the Applications folder and not in the iMovie 9.0.9 folder.

Does iMovie 10.1 launch when you double - click the purple iMovie icon in the iMovie 9.0.9 folder?

Does iMovie 10.1 launch when you click on "Open" in the App Store purchases list?
