Q: Remove old trackpad/keyboard reference from new iMac

I recently got an iMac and had to return it because of a problem. Before doing so I took a time machine backup, and when I got my replacement iMac I restored from this backup. Under bluetooth in system preferences, there are still references to the Magic Trackpad 2 and Magic Keyboard 2 which was associated with the faulty iMac. I've tried clicking the 'x' which appears as I mouse over the peripherals, but it doesn't work. It says "Couldn't connect to the device" and a "Pair" button appears. Of course I can't pair with these devices since they are no longer in my possession.

Anyone had similar problems or can help me?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), Magic Trackpad 2, Magic Keyboard 2

I ended up modifying the file com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in ~Library/Preferences. In this file the peripherals are listed by MAC-address under HIDDevices. I found the correct MAC-addresses by right-clicking the devices I wanted to remove under System Preferences -> Bluetooth. Removing those items in the .plist-file and logging out and back in resolved my issue. If anyone else is having this issue: it's a good idea to make a copy of the .plist-file before you edit it.

    1. Hold down the option key on your Mac's keyboard.
    2. Click on the Bluetooth menu. Notice that the Bluetooth menu looks different. It provides more detailed information about Bluetooth firmware, address, and provides an option to export a report to your desktop.
    3. Select the device you wish to remove from the Bluetooth menu. A popup menu will appear; click Remove.
    4. The Mac will ask you if you're sure you want to remove the device. Click the Removebutton to confirm.
