Browse iOS files on Mac?

Hello, for a while I have been trying to do the question above. It hasn't worked in any way so far, and I really don't feel like paying money for any software. I was wondering if I could get some information on this, such as how would I get the file directory in Finder on a MacBook Pro, or how to mount it as a disk, etc.. I need some files that are inside of my iPad that I can't access through iTunes or anything of the sort. There are paid services, such as iExplorer, but I genuinely hate that software. There are others, but they just don't seem to work with Finder. I would like to know if there is any free software to put the file directory of my iPad and iPhone in Finder, or if I even need software at all. If this isn't clear, here's an example.

I want to get some app files off of my iPhone. I want to use free or built-in software that works in Finder, so I can see timestamps and open it in apps and such.

How would I do this? Do I have to jailbreak my device? Do I have to pay for third-party software to do this? Someone please answer, I need this fast.

Thanks.

If it helps, I am on the latest verison of Mac OSX, 10.11.1 and my devices are all the latest versions of iOS for my iPod 5, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and iPad Mini.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
