Q: Image capture (10.9.5, Canon printers) makes black scans

I was using a Canon MP210 all-in-one with my iMac8,1 and I upgraded to Mavericks, and it worked fine for awhile, but then last week I started getting pdf or TIFF scans that were either black (usually) or else mostly black with a square of image in the lower left corner. The overview scan looks fine on the screen. I thought the scanner had died and I needed ink anyway, so I bought a Canon MG2520. No help. I discovered that if one hit "Restore defaults" under "Image correction", one would get a real scan. Unfortunately, the ink on this print is light and needs the threshold adjustment, and when that is applied, it goes to all-black again. I've deleted the scanner in Systems preferences, and manually loaded the ICA driver from Canon, to no avail. The Canon scanner software gives me no image at all. Image Capture 6.3 has under File: Take Picture (greyed out) and Close. Can somebody help me make this thing work the way it used to?

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

No luck. After getting both the scanner and the pdf printer back, no change.

    See if VueScan helps.

If that doesn't help, try contacting Canon.

The plot sickens. Now my workplace machine is involved (same model imac and software, Epson RX500). First I was getting greyscale scans when set on "text" (with no image correction set). Now I'm getting black scans with no image correction set, AND it also tries to scan a "page 2" automatically. There are other oddnesses as well.

Either it's an email-borne virus (only contact between both computers) which seems unlikely, or somehow Apple broke this with the last update. Yes, I could try VueScan, but if I have to use 3rd-party software, futz with drivers, and put up with crappy corporate politics, why shouldn't I buy a Windows machine for half the price?

Do you think going with El Capitan will help? I've been holding off because of my apps, but apparently Finale at least has fixed the things that broke with 10.11; I'll check my others. It's time to replace my home machine anyway (7 years old), though I don't have say on the office machine.
