workout app randomly starting

It may help to restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off together first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:

- To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off;

- To turn it on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

It may otherwise help to unpair and re-pair your watch. The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).

I also have this problem, have updated and tried all the suggestions.

As soon as I take it off the charger it is on, but the app isn't actively running. I also have to start and stop a workout to get it off. Today it just randomly started after I'd been wearing it for hours.

Good thought, but no. I've checked, even removed apps from phone/watch completely that might initiate the workout app on my watch. It still does it, every morning I have to manually shut it off as soon as it comes off the charger.

Have same issue. Restarted both devices. In couple of minutes got running man icon again. Any other thoughts how to fix the issue?

Also, if you have not yet done so, it may help to update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software versions (presently iOS 9.2 and watchOS 2.1).

If the issue persists, try these steps:

• On your iPhone: close all open apps (double-click the Home button, then swipe up on each app).
• Force restart your watch by pressing and holding both the side button and Digital Crown for around 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

• Check your heart rate:
  • When viewing the time on your watch face, swipe up on the screen, swipe left / right to the Heartbeat Glance - allow time for it to take a reading, then swipe down to exit.
  • Then also tell Siri: "check my heart rate", wait for the reading, then press the Digital Crown to exit.
• On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Workout - turn on Power Saving Mode (this can be turned off later).
• On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > turn off Heart Rate and Fitness Tracking. These can be re-enabled after the final step.
• Then restart both devices (off together, restart iPhone first).

Set up an appointment at Apple Store on Monday next week. Will let you know results then.

Sorry for delay with answer, was on vacation. I have cancelled my appointment because the issue gone after updating to the latest version.

You may presently have a workout paused in either the Workout app or in a third-party fitness app (such as Strava) that you have used previously.

If you have been using Strava or any other third-party app, you need to end the activity via that app on your watch (not on your iPhone).
