Q: Bluetooth device visible, won't connect, still works... kind of

Macbook Pro 15" Retina late 2013. Mac OSX 10.11.1

Magic Trackpad A1339

Magic Keyboard A1314

From a fresh restart everything pairs up and connects nicely. If I take the laptop out of range of the wireless devices they still appear but won't connect. This means they show up in the bluetooth list as standard, non-bold text. However, they still work. Only the trackpad has super limited functionality. The tracking speed is super slow and no auxiliary functions, like scrolling or touch tapping work.

I've attempted with no success:

* turning off bluetooth and turning back on

* removing the batteries from the trackpad and reinserting

* turning off bluetooth, removing and replacing trackpad batteries, turning on bluetooth

* turning off bluetooth, removing trackpad batteries, turning on bluetooth, replacing trackpad batteries

* turning off the trackpad and turning it back on

* turning off trackpad, turning off bluetooth, turning on trackpad

* manually attempting to pair the device from bluetooth preferences

* replacing the trackpad batteries with new batteries

I've attempted with success:

* restarting the computer, turning bluetooth back on, no other action everything works as it should, devices are paired automatically

* OS X: Bluetooth devices become unresponsive - Apple Support
