How do I spread text across multi cells

Working in Numbers 3.6.1. How do I enter text and have it spread across several cells.

select the cells, then select the menu item "Table > Merge Cells"


I should warn you to be aware that weird things happen with sorting and other operations when cells are merged.

The behaviour described below applies in Numbers 2. It may also apply in Numbers 3.


Text entered into a cell which has not been set to wrap the text will overflow into adjacent EMPTY cells in the direction away from the alignment setting for the cell. The overflow will be blocked by any content in the cell into which the text would overflow.


D6 and D7 contain the same text.

D6 shows what happens when text extends beyond the edge of the table.

D7 shows the result when the cell contining the same text is selected, then clicked a second time.
