Can't login to Facebook Chat in Messages for El Capitan

In the last week or so, I have been unable to access my FaceBooik account for chatting via Messages for El Capitan.

I get the password prompt, enter the password, and it continues to appear. The settings are correct (they haven't changed) and the password is correct.

Other accounts are fine.

I can use other chat apps that support Facebook without problem.

A Keychain problem? There appears to be no First Aid function there anymore.

Peace,

Gene

You can make Messenger it's own Mac App with Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/). I've done it with Facebook and I've done it with FB Messenger (and many other websites I commonly use). It still won't allow you to add FB Messenger to Messages, but it does allow you to separate Messenger (or any other website) from your browser.

It works with El Capitan but I'm unsure of is if installing Fluid is possible on Sierra since Apple locked down the apps you're allowed to install.

I run Apple everything (laptop, phone, watch, TV) but this walling off the garden is starting to REALLY detract from the user experience!

Looks like Facebook is giving us the shaft

Anyone have another workaround? I refuse to have WhatsApp open on my browser, Goofy for Messenger open on my desktop, plus Skype, plus Messages for OS X... This is getting ridiculous. Can't all the messaging apps just be friends?

I saw an article that Facebook was developing their own solution for Mac here: http://techcrunch.com/2016/01/09/facebook-messenger-for-mac/#.m5tbdhp:nZtG

I tried using it in Messages as I said "I think we already have this feature" and it didn't work. I'm guessing Facebook is developing the App and as a result has turned off the server.

An alternative option that I found (but have not tested) is this app:

Hi,

I would guess the second no longer works as it looks like it joins the Jabber server that Facebook have just closed.

I would surmise that in both cases that are "Look and Feel" issues in the making.

Google used their GoogleMail and Gmail IDs but got around the Server Name issue by giving the server a different name (Unlike every other Jabber server)

Facebook kept with the Naming format for Jabber server bu this meant everyone getting a separate Chat ID.

As the Jabber ID from Facebook can then be used in any Jabber capable app and possibly the confusing over two IDs probably led to this discussion.

Hi,

From Messages ?

You can't.

Google created their GoogleTalk accounts some while ago but linking the Google emails IDs to a Jabber server.

There is one exception with other Jabber/XMPP server in that there are two types of Google Mail IDs (@gmail.com and the longer @googemail.com)

This means that Google set up a server name of talk.google.com instead of the normal practice of using the bit after the @ symbol.

More recently Facebook also started a Jabber Server and gave everyone a Chat ID.

Closer to 3 years ago Facebook ended this option https://developers.facebook.com/docs/chat/ so the Facebook Chat ID no longer works.

You either have to get a Facebook Chat App from the App Store (there are many) or use a separate tab in your browser with your regular Facebook ID (no need for a separate chat ID)
