I updated my apple id to a new email address, now my phone is logged in with the old apple id, wont let me reset password because old id no longer valid, can't logout because don't have password. How can i change to the new id ?

When you say your phone is logged in with the old Apple ID, does that mean logged into iCloud? or iTunes?
You may need to temporarily revert back to the old Apple ID to log out as explained in this article.
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID in iCloud - Apple Support
