You can only download El Capitan, as Yosemite has been removed from the App Store.

If you previously downloaded Yosemite you can re-download Yosemite.

It is not necessary to upgrade to Yosemite before El Capitan.

Good day All, I am in a similar position. I was happy with Mavericks until recently, but have now decided to upgrade and having worked on several client's Macs that are running YOSEMITE, and finding the system quite reliable, I am now wanting to upgrade to YOSEMITE. BUT, as I am reading here, we are apparently NOT ALLOWED TO! As if we are naughty schoolchildren being told to sit down down and be quiet! HUH! For months, I'm not sure how many, YOSEMITE is offered on APP STORE as a FREE UPGRADE!  Specifically with Adobe products, there ARE ISSUES with Al Capitan, and right now I don't want to to upgrade to it - I want YOSEMITE..!

Since receiving my first response, I've done a bit more digging.  Yosemite is available through macupdate.com  According to a colleague, they are a reliable source - I am going to give it a go.  I was advised to go to Yosemite prior to upgrading finally to El Capitan.  The reason was that Yosemite is, in his view, reliable and a useful step prior to making the big jump to EC.

Apple removes the previous OS from the App Store with each successive update.

    i.e.

When Mavericks was released Apple removed Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.

When Yosemite was released Apple removed Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

When El Capitan was released Apple removed Yosemite from the Mac App Store.

    As I stated:

You can only download El Capitan, as Yosemite has been removed from the App Store.

If you previously downloaded Yosemite you can re-download Yosemite.

I would seriously advise against downloading a pirated copy of Yosemite as pirated software usually has adware, malware etc.

Okay - so do you reckon that upgrading from 10.6.8 to El Capitan should harbour no major issues?

To check if your mac is capable of running El Capitan: Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

You should also check http://roaringapps.com/ to see if all of the current programs that are on your mac will still be able to work, as El Capitan does not support PowerPC programs that were able to run in Snow Leopard.

Luigi, why - I ask you, does Apple do this? Surely it makes NO DIFFERENCE to Apple which version I choose to run!? Now you're talking about pirated versions... I have been an Apple use for close on twenty years, but this is really annoying me, besides the obvious pulling the plug on FCP Studio of course.

I don't accept the nonchalant 'explanation' of 'Apple pulls previous versions'... I CHOOSE to use YOSEMITE, and I want to be able to download it - from APPLE!

...and if I did do this Luigi, and it refused to work properly with my Adobe software, which is how I make my living, and which I've been told DOES cause major issues... will you reimburse me for the lost hours, frustration and cost to get my Mac working again... si=omehow I doubt it.. Its too easy to sit there glibly and make pronouncements that one doesn't need Yosemite, and to rather go directly to Al Capitan...

    1. You should start your own post instead of hanging on to someone else's post.

    2. If you maintain a full backup of your current partition, something that everyone should do, preferably a clone, then your risk of upgrading is nullified.
