How do I enter letters to input a response to IVR on iPhone 6 Plus

Hi

I have iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 9.1. Today morning I called up a bank and the interactive voice recorder wanted me to enter my ID number (Let's say my ID is P3245123G

I gave up because I could not find a way to enter the letters. Can anyone please help me as to how to use the dial pad to enter this alphanumeric ID?

What I tried, wasting multiple calls,

1. Double clicking the key 7 in the hope that P would come up but all I got was 77

2. Long holding 7 only 7 came up

3. Press * followed by a 7 followed by a 1 - *71 came up.

Why can't the things be more simple and self explanatory? Like say providing a button to change between numbers & letters?

There is no way to enter a letter from any telephone keypad (iPhone or landline phone) and have it display.Typically if a letter is to be entered you enter the corresponding number in its place (7 for P) and the 7 displays. If that doesn't work with your bank, contact them. Some have different methods such as skipping the letter but they normally give instructions for something like that in their recording.
