Q: CarPlay bug is ruining my experience

I'm having a problem with CarPlay in my new car that's really ruining the experience for me. When selecting the artists or songs tab on the right-hand side there are two arrows for up-and-down movement. In between these arrows is a an alphabet symbol that brings you to a screen where you can select a letter to view artists or songs that start with that letter.

My issue is that this symbol to bring me to the alphabet selection screen is missing 99% of the time, the area where it should be is blank. Occasionally it will reappear but there's no pattern to it.

One other odd related behavior I've noticed is that when the alphabet letter selector is missing I can only scroll down about 10 artists or songs and then it says "more", when I click that it brings me into Siri. However when the alphabet selector is present I am able to scroll down and look at as many artists or songs as I would like.

This has been happening with my brand-new iPhone as well as the one I had previously. I've been running every recent versions of iOS, they all have this problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this or have a solution?

Thank you!

    Howdy docprego,

I understand that you're seeing some odd behavior from your car's stereo system when using CarPlay. Fortunately the steps outlined below can help resolve most issues you may encounter in such a setup.

    1. Check with the manufacturer to make sure that your car stereo works with CarPlay.
    2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Siri and make sure that Siri is turned on.
    3. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on the car you have, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
    4. Connect your iPhone to a different CarPlay USB port (if you have one).
    5. Try a different Lightning cable.
    6. Update your iPhone.
    7. Install any firmware updates for your CarPlay stereo.

Just to follow up my own post, I finally figured this out today.  It turns out that when the car is in any gear the alphabetical selector is deactivated.   As soon as I place it in park the selector returns.  So now I understand why this happens but I don't understand the purpose of it.  Best I can figure is that Apple wants CarPlay to be as hands free as possible when the vehicle is in motion.  I think this is somewhat ludicrous as there are about 6-8 artists or songs listed and clickable even when the car is in motion.

So now I know why but that doesn't really make the situation any better.
