Q: view hidden user library
My Mail Rules disappeared, as a result of logging out out of and back into my two Apple IDs (long story not worth recounting). I found an article describing how to fix the problem, but I have hit a snag.
Here's what I'm trying to do:
Re: How do I retrieve mail rules lost on upgrade to Yosemite from 10.6.8in response to donaldos
Enter your backup and go to a Snow Leopard backup, the User/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.
Once I get to a backup from a couple of days ago in Time machine, I am unable to actually find the MessageRules.plist file. That's because the Library in the Users folder is Hidden. I know how to see the one on my internal hard drive, but not elsewhere. Can somebody please tell me how?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Mail. Enter Time Machine.
