Dec 12, 2015 12:18 PM in response to Marsberryby Rich Rydalch,You've piqued my curiosity. I presume you are able to create a movie with video. When you pull in a photo to your movie, does it show up in the project media or event library correctly? Or does it also show there as black?

Dec 12, 2015 12:57 PM in response to applex2by Rich Rydalch,For those having problems with movies they "Updated" from iMovie v9 to iMovie v10, this may help. I found this on another discussion.
1. Check that iMovie is closed and that you have a good backup!
2. Open the iMovie Library with Show Package Contents
3. Open the folder of the event related to the project and delete the sub-folders inside "Render Files"
4. Open the folder of the project (if there is one) and delete the sub-folders inside "Render Files"
5. Launch iMovie and enjoy that all the thumbnails are now back (expect some rebuilding in background).

Dec 12, 2015 1:11 PM in response to Rich Rydalchby applex2,My issues is exporting my movies......can not export in any way. I don't edit with pictures. I only use video, transitions, and titles. I can produce movies all day, just CAN'T export. very frustrating! all this has happened since upgrading to el capitan using imovie 10.1 on my macbook pro late 2014 retina display.

Dec 12, 2015 1:37 PM in response to applex2by Rich Rydalch,You probably should start a new discussion with this problem. That way if there are any other with the same problem they might give you some help. In all the discussions I am participating in I have never heard of this problem. My guess is that it is not related to either the El Capitan system nor to iMovie.
Just for my curiosity, are the e="Share" selections available in the menu?

Dec 17, 2015 6:22 PM in response to Marsberryby Marsberry,I wanted to let others know that I reached out to Apple Support again and they have found a work-around to the issue of the photos showing as black in iMovie since updating to El Capitan. It appears that they have reduced the size of the photos accepted in projects in El Capitan - photos need to be under 3000. Here is what they told me to do:
1. Select the blank/black square in your iMovie project. In the viewing window find the information button - a lower case i with a circle around it, I believe. Find out the number of this picture.
2. Open up Photos and search for that image. Drag it to your desktop (you can't change the size of a picture in Photos.
3. Open up the picture (it should open in Preview). Go to Tools and Adjust Size - I changed the top number to 2000 in every picture.
4. Import the resized photo into Photos.
5. Return to iMovie and search for the new image where you would import photos - you can search for the photo number. It should pull up the original and the resized photo - the resized photo is the second one. Pull it into your project - hover over the black square and you should be given the option to replace.
This worked for all of my movies! It's annoying that they have altered the size of the photos that can be used - requiring this work-around. However, I'm grateful to have my projects working again!!!

Dec 18, 2015 2:22 AM in response to Marsberryby GeeD,Thanks for the info which is very useful - but I'd just like to clarify a few points:
"It appears that they have reduced the size of the photos accepted in projects in El Capitan" Specifically iMovie 9 (not iMovie 10)
"photos need to be under 3000" 3000 what? 3000 pixels wide?
"I changed the top number to 2000 in every picture" Do you mean the Width setting in pixels as below?
A photo with the above dimensions imported to iMovie 10.1 OK.

Dec 18, 2015 6:14 PM in response to GeeDby Marsberry,This is very interesting. I am working from iMovie 10.1 and still had issues with the large pictures. Any idea why that is? And yes, it was under 3000 pixels wide. I manually changed each image to be 2000 pixels wide and that worked.
I would be very curious to know if you have ideas as to why my iMovie 10.1 won't allow images greater than 3000 pixels. It is a pain to have to manually edit each photo.

It does allow bigger images.
This must be due to something other than iMovie 10.1 since I don't find this restriction (and 10.1 is designed to work with 4K video).
When you were talking to Apple support were you using iMovie 9 or 10? If it was 10 then their explanation is a bit odd.
I would hazard a guess that it has more to do with changes to low-level graphics routines made in El Capitan, which may cause different behaviour depending on computer model and especially graphics card. In the case of iMovie 9 this might well be using some now deprecated graphics routines. What Mac model are you using?

Dec 19, 2015 7:44 AM in response to GeeDby Marsberry,It is probably due to the fact that I am working on an old computer - iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) and the graphics (NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB). Can I update my graphics card without having to buy a new computer?
-
Dec 19, 2015 2:37 PM in response to Marsberryby GeeD,Apple has not to my knowledge placed any restrictions on video cards that are compatible with iMovie 10.1 which would imply that it should run on any machine capable of running Yosemite (latest OS when it was introduced) or later.
I have just confirmed that I can import and display without problem that same large still into iMovie 10.1 running under El Capitan 10.11.2 on my 2007 MacBook Pro which has an even older graphics card than yours - an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with only 128 MB VRAM.
I therefore think it ought to run on your machine. You might try running it from a different user account in case you have some 3rd party code running that is causing the problem. If it still doesn't work try reinstalling.
It is not possible to upgrade video cards on any iMac but I don't think this is the problem.

Dec 21, 2015 6:10 AM in response to GeeDby Marsberry,First of all, thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions! Secondly, I don't think that a different user would help - Apple support tried that for me while I shared my screen with them and I was still having the same problems. How would I go about resinstalling El Capitan? I am not a tech person when it comes to computers and I would be afraid that I did it wrong. However, I would love to experience the benefits of El Capitan as well as iMovie 10.1 instead of all of the headaches I've experienced thus far.

Dec 21, 2015 11:24 AM in response to Marsberryby GeeD,You can reinstall OS 10.11.2 using the recovery system. See: OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
but if Apple support didn't do this or recommend this I'm doubtful whether it's going to help. Have you tried reinstalling iMovie 10.1?
Did you contact Apple support by telephone or actually take your machine into an Apple store? If possible taking the machine to a store should allow them to do a more thorough investigation.
At least you do have a workaround for the time being (reducing photo resolution) and hopefully the issue will be resolved in future updates.
Sorry but I can't really suggest anything more.
Geoff.

Dec 28, 2015 8:32 PM in response to GeeDby Rich Rydalch,UPDATE TO ALL:
I just today had the "Black Photo" problem pop up.
I had the photo set to 3840 x 2560. I reduced to 3300 and still no luck. Dropped it to 3200 and all is well. I did notice that the preview in the event would show the photo but if I skim over it, it would go black. I tried this on both my MacBook Pro 15” - Mid 2009 Model A1286 and my iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) Model Number: MB950LL/A. Same on both.
I then went back to iMovie v9 on my old iMac 20” - Early 2006 Model = MA200LL and that same photo works fine. Interesting that Apple would somehow have introduced this limitation on iMovie 10.1. Especially as they now have introduced 4K video. Seems more logical that they would at least allow 4K photos.
GeeD; you say you have found no limitations on El Capitan and iMovie 10.1. Have you tried the high pixel photos on several computers?
