Caution 10.11.2

My rMBP is a brick now after upgrade to 10.11.2.

It will start up, but no response to dock items, folder icons are generic. Apps will not open. Truly a brick now.

Caution.

Determine if you can start your Mac in "Safe Mode":

  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Did you have any AV or so called "cleaning" software/apps installed?

Did you have FileVault turned on while updating (should turn that off first).

Before trying the next steps, I hope you have a backup (especially if you can't access anything).

If Safe mode does not help, use recovery (Command + R) to reinstall the OS over the top of what you have; or, a more radical step: use Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R until you see a progress bar) to connect to Apple's Servers. Once you see the Utilities window, use Disk Utility to erase your drive; when done, choose to reinstall the OS. At that point, it should reinstall the original OS version.

FWIW, such problems are usually the result of having things installed that are not compatible or wreak havoc on the system and/or installer - usually third party.

If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Same issue here, iMac 27 late 2013. 😠

My impression is, that 10.11.2 has an issue with permissions.

Finder is very slow, does not show all files, no app can be opened (pop up notice: might be broken).

Save boot does not help.

When trying to boot into single user / terminal and performing permissions repair, it always says: permission denied, read only!

Strange thing: my wife's account works properly.

1st attempt was: FileVault on, update from 10.11.1 to 10.11.2 via App Store --> everything is broken.

2nd attempt after time machine restore: FileVault off, 10.11.1 to 10.11.2 via combo update downloaded on Apple page --> same issue.

2nd time machine restore is ongoing, will ban 10.11.2 now! Apple really has an issue with OSX for years now, fix it!

By the way: please also fix your USB issue in El Capitan, my eyetv VCR is still broken!

Best regards

Sebastian

Unfortunately, we are not Apple - we are all other users, so we cannot fix anything like that. You need to contact Apple.

You should never have FileVault enabled when doing an update.

Permissions are not dealt with in the background; they are no longer available to the user to 'fix'.

If there are multiple issues (too many to try and fix), back up your files, and use internet recovery (Command + Option + R) to then erase your hard drive and reinstall the original OS. Remember to turn off FileVault and unplug any peripheral except keyboard and mouse.

All updates bevor worked properly with FileVault on and as you can read above, FileVault is not the issue.

And users can still repair permissions via terminal, you can find several post regarding this topic.

When it says for approximately 100 pages, permissions wrong, but cannot fix it due to read-only as sudo, then there is an issue.

Best regards

Sebastian
