You need an Ethernet connection to share it out over Wi-Fi.

When you share your Ethernet connection out over Wi-Fi, it creates a simple software Router on your MacBook that can accept connections from other Wi-Fi devices. But there is no magical merging of souls between the devices, it's just a Router.

If you don't have an existing Ethernet connection to your MacBook, you may as well just hop right on the existing Wi-Fi with all the devices.
