Sorry to hear that your iPhone took a bath. I know that it can be upsetting but lets see if you have a recent back up.
Now you mention some recent phone numbers. Are these recent contacts or were they just numbers that called you and you haven't made them a contact yet? If the answer is yet to either of those, not suggestion below will walk you through. looking that information up.
I will say that if you made a backup in iTunes, you can see when the last one was done. Take a look at the first article to go over how to look at that.

Now if you backup your iPhone through iCloud and use iCloud to sync your contacts, you can look them up at iCloud.com/contacts. If you are wanting to know when your last backup was done, you will only be able to find out if the phone has power or restoring your backup to a new device.
