Unstable Macbook Pro (early 2011) using 10.9.5 (com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.crash reporting every second in console logs)

Hello

I am currently experiencing several bizarre issues that have created an unusable machine.

My macbook pro (early 2011 model) is using 10.9.5 . Late Sunday I had used Safari to load up a link that contained a flash video on IGN.com (as I keep flash shut off by default in Firefox due to constant discovery of security vulnerabilities). After a minute or so of watching the video, the playback started to play frame by frame. Then my computer decided to reboot, showing a system screen stating that there was a problem and at any moment it was going to reboot (not exact words but a common screen).

The machine stuck on the white screen at bootup. I manually shut it down after several minutes of it not going anywhere, put in DiskWarrior to see if it would help recover the system. As usual it helped me get back into OS X (I have a saved pdf report from this that may actually tell me what it did with files/directory rebuilding) but from this point is where several things changed on me. The notification pane went missing, the app store wouldn't launch. The computer fans were spinning and that is when I went into the console to look at the logs.

Every second it was producing the following text in the log, which explains part of the reason why the computer was working so hard:

ReportCrash com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.crash

Along with other errors having to do with OpenGL showing up every other second too (graphics look sluggish, as if I were in safe boot).

I checked the activity monitor and seen a task that has to do with the kernel was taking up over a gig of RAM (I never watched the activity monitor to see what is typical).

QuickTime didn't allow for a screen capture (possibly to do with the graphics being switched to maybe software only?).

Before all this happened, an antivirus program called Sophos, quit working. I also was unable to uninstall it, it failed every time. When it was working it kept giving me an alert for a virus (php-agent), I would kill it every time it randomly pop up. I found some random pop ups in Firefox as well that I had been able to view the java source, which led to some sort of malware installers being called. Uncertain if it managed to install anything. These may be vague details but it is all I can remember without being on the machine as I type this (and I can't bring back the pop ups with the malware, at least I don't believe, unless they are in the browsers history still).

My computer has been randomly rebooting lately as well. I did have my machine repaired due to the video issues ( https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/ ). Not sure if this problem is related to the random pieces of the operating system disappearing (app store, notifications center).

When I looked at the keychain application under utilities, I seen a public and private key that are called <key>. Each key said that any user could use it. Is this typical? Could it be part of the my issues?

I have made a backup of the hard drive, I may be doing another since my first backup was in a dmg file and I rather have access to my files in case I have to resort to using a PC for now. The reason I detail this all here is in case anyone else is facing similar issues and to seek advice. I plan on wiping the computer and starting over but if there are some things I can try before I do, that would be great (any recommendation to which OS would be a better choice at this time for stability/security would also be good to know, though I honestly don't trust anything at this point due to rampant hacking/malicious malware). May also consider running a virtual machine next go around just for using the internet.

I appreciate any advice and would be glad to add any details I may of left out. Thanks.

Do you have a copy of the crash report you could post?

Console post see first post by Linc Davis

Console using

Kernel Panic Log

If the log won’t post, try posting it here and provide a link in a reply Pastebin

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

EtreCheck shows two invalid signatures for

[loaded] com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist - Invalid signature!

[loaded] com.apple.screensharing.MessagesAgent.plist - Invalid signature!

Additional details:

My wifi set to off, the icon keeps blinking oddly as if it is trying to connect, even though I have it turned off. For the most part I use my Ethernet when I am at home. Spotlight is also endlessly indexing. Using firefox to email the logs and the EtreCheck was giving me issues. Adobe Flash just came out with an update Thursday (12/10/15), dealing with security.

Thanks to those in advance that can help.

Is there a way to get notified when Apple issues updates to its operating systems? I would of never known unless doing my own research and since not being able to see the update notifications as I been on another machine since. I see now as of Tuesday December 8th there were some updates fixing security issues. My issues occurred a day prior to the update and I am unable to access the app store to run the updates.

edit - I do see it being possible to get updates from - Apple - Support - Downloads

There have not been any updates to Mavericks. The App Store application should have been bugging you to upgrade to Yosemite all last year, and now it should be telling you about El Capitan. Maybe you should check your System Preferences -> App Store settings

Start by removing Sophos

Your NotificationCenter_2015-12-12-182853_[redacted].crash is constantly crashing. This is most likely sucking down a lot of system resources restarting the notification center.

You can use Applications -> Utilities -> Console to monitor the notification center crashing.

Try booting into Safe mode to see if that stops notification center crashes

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

If Safe mode stops the notification center crashes, then you most likely have a 3rd party addition (one of the many things listed in the EtreCheck output) that is causing problems. Many times 3rd party additions installed on one prior OS X release are not compatible with the most recent release.

Sophos won't let me uninstall it with its removal program or through the terminal. It fails.

When I was in safe mode, the console continued to show the same errors that last I remember.

Apple - Support - Downloads - This page has a security update for Mavericks that came out this past Tuesday (About the security content of OS X El Capitan 10.11.2, Security Update 2015-005 Yosemite, and Security Update 2015-008 M…), which is why I mention it. The app store does not work as it gives me an error when loading.

I have not used my macbook pro this week due to the issues, therefore not seeing any notifications for updates.

I found these commands in my terminal by using the up arrow, not exactly sure if I did this or not:

rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/*

I went ahead and started the computer up in recovery mode (CMD+R) and ran the installation of the OS. It kept my existing files/applications.

Before doing that, I was unsuccessful at removing Sophos, it would always fail. I also noticed for the first time I was unable to get into the OS X Security settings. After reinstalling OS X, I was able to uninstall Sophos. The logs no longer are throwing an error every second, my graphics are normal (no OpenGL errors). I updated Flash Player to the latest version and I am currently running updates that were released recently by Apple.

Is there anything else I should consider doing to make sure I don't run into any further issues (anything to stop my files from being altered without me knowing)? I am still wondering if I should be concerned with the 2 keys in my keychain. Thanks for any suggestions.
