Disc 2 not working Re install tiger

I did a factory reset and I am trying to re install tiger, It gets through disc 1 fine but at the end of disc 2 it says there is an error. Is there a way to upgrade to a newer os without re installing tiger?

That second Disc thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

We need more info about your Mac to see if it will even be capable of a newer OSX or which one.,

So we know more about it...

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.4.7 (8K1106) Maximum MacOS: X 10.7.5*

Standard RAM: 512 MB, 1 GB* Maximum RAM: 2 GB
Details: 512 MB of RAM is installed as two 256 MB SO-DIMM modules, no slots free.
*The version sold to educational institutions from August 7, 2007 to April 7, 2009 shipped with 1 GB of RAM standard.

So, you'd need more RAM...

Then 10.6 would be the cheapest upgrade...

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

General requirements

* Mac computer with an Intel processor

* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)

* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

* DVD drive for installation

* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...

Though you could use 10.5.x...

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

A difficult situation. The RAM is really limiting. You will find more new versions of software still compatible with OSX 10.6 though even that is now getting left behind. In my opinion Leopard 10.5 just isn't worth it anymore. You won't get much more in the way of software support and it will likely cost as much or more than Snow Leopard from Apple ($20).

I would definitely get more RAM ($18 from OWC using the link BDAqua provided). For about $40 you can make an incremental jump in your computer though it still won't be a muscle machine and it still will be left behind by many of the new software upgrades out there. This machine will stretch things out a bit longer and let you start budgeting for your next big jump which will likely require software upgrades which can be costly.

Software compatibility is an issue but frankly it is always an issue unless you have a room full of identical model backup computers which will let you stay with the same software for the rest of your life. There is not that big a jump between Tiger and Snow Leopard applications for Intel Macs so probably most of what you are running now would still work.

Warning: Do not buy any new i-devices if this is your only computer! They will not work with it.
