Alternative for iDVD on iMac El Capitan 10.11.1

Hi there,

Is there an alternative for iDVD.

I have a brand new iMac with El Capitan 10.11.1

I see offerings from Wondershare and iSkysoft. Do they work properly ? Any experience with any of them ? Which one works best ?

Thanks in advance,

Appelbum

I strongly recommend that you do not use stick on labels on your DVD/CD discs. That's formula for disaster down the line when the cable dries out and begins to peel up. The disk can get stuck in an optical drive and/or run unbalanced.

I recommend getting printable discs and an printer that can print directly onto discs. Both Epson and Canon offer printers that can print on discs but Espon, in my experience, is easier to use and can work with the excellent label program Discus. It has a demo version you can try.

Hi, all. It's 12/1/17 and I have 2 questions. (1) I'm stuck trying to use iDVD. In version 10.12 I created a iDVD file called "T/S" then sent it to Toast Titanium. The whole iDVD file worked fine till I installed the latest OS (v10.13.1). Utter failure! Can anyone suggest an alternative. I'd like to use Toast, but could buy another app. (2) another problem is printing the DVD label. I have an Epson XP-860 printer, but it refuses to use the dedicated boundaries = screwed-up labels (even though I use scissors!) I have asked Epson and DiscLabel-6 tech support groups for help. They couldn't help.

Since I do NOT use the Apple community programs, please e-mail me at realpep@me.com. Thanx. Tad

The only 3rd party video DVD authoring apps I've tired are DVD Maker Pro, DVD Creator Lite and Toast. The one feature each has which is important to me is the capability of saving the project as a disk image so it can be tested with DVD Player before trying to burn to disk.

None have the versatility of iDVD in menu design, etc.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

So to enlarge on this reply, do I understand El Cap no longer allows iDVD to Burn a playable DVD?

I'm sure it used to burn a playable DVD on Mavericks but I just discovered iDVD will only burn to Audio-TS and video_TS Folders since I upgraded to EL Cap. Am I correct?

OK to answer my own question, iDVD will only burn the iso which then has to be burned in Finder with right click.

I also tried miDVD which worked and as I wanted several chapters I paid for miDVD Pro. Simple, effective and works like iDVD used to.

(Just sold my iLife '11 disk to pay for miDVD Pro)

I'm also looking for an alternative to iDVD, but the one feature that is important to me is the ability to create chapter menus from Chapter Markers that I insert into my videos when I create them in Final Cut Pro X. When I imported into iDVD a QuickTime movie that contained Chapter Markers, iDVD automatically created both the Main Menu and one or more Chapter Menu pages.

Does anyone know of a currently supported DVD-creation app that includes support for Chapter Markers within a single .mov file?

Thanks,

Bill

I don't know of such an app. However, you might do what has been suggested previously and that is to create a volume on your boot drive and install Mavericks on it to run iDVD and, if you have it, iMovie 6 HD. That combination allows one to make terrific video DVDs and outstanding slideshows from iMovie with multiple audio tracks:

IMO it was the best version of iMovie offered.

If you have installed Mavericks previously on any Mac it will still be available for download in the Purchased section in your App Store account:

Yes! There is exactly one program that will do what you want. iDVD.

Many software writers make DVD burning software. Unfortunately, none of them come close to the power and ease of use of iDVD. I have successfully used iDVD on OS 10.11. However, for stability purposes I have a partition on my hard drive for OS 10.9.5. This also allows me to run iMovie HD 06.

Honestly, I wish the situation were otherwise. But it is, what it is. When Apple wrote iDVD, they set the bar very high. Some very clever people wrote iDVD. I often wonder what they are doing now.

a basic guide to partition my hard drive to use iMovie 6 and iDVD

Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk

Create a Dual-Boot Mac OS X System Disk | Larry Jordan

How then to access these programs from the partition

1 - Install Mavericks on the partition.

2 - To access that partition restart your Mac with the Opiton key held down and in the resulting window select the Mavericks partition to boot from.

Thanks OT

Ive just checked and I still have iMovie 6 (I had to go back into my Time Machine to get it as I deleted it after upgrading to El Capitan as it was greyed out), so I guess this is worth doing

Am I right in saying that I have to erase my HD to do this? If so would i then just reinstall one partition from my Time Machine and then download Mavericks onto the smaller partition?

What size partition would you suggest for Mavericks and Time Machine? Do i need the partition large enough to store iDVD's on or wold these be stored on the main partition? If they are stored on the smaller iDVD partition, can they be moved internally or would this have to be done by an external device?

Sorry I have 2 more questions regarding partitioning.

1. would I be better off using Mountain Lion Rather than Mavericks on this new partition or doesn't it really matter?

2. would I also be better using a separate HD for this rather than partitioning my internal HD or would this option be too slow? I ask as I have a spare 60Gb hard drive available but its only USB2 so it may be too slow for this purpose?
