Q: System wont boot after OS X 10.11.2 update

Running a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM. Downloaded and installed the 10.11.2 update, upon restart the progress bar gets to about 3/4 of the way to completion then stops, leaving a black background with the white apple logo and the locked progress bar. Recloned my computer's hard drive off the backup I made prior to installing the update, booted the computer again, then tried to apply the update once more with the same result.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), 16GB RAM

For some reason, the update failed to install correctly.

For system updates, I prefer to always download the "combo update" and install it this way. I have just done so again to install 10.11.2 on a similar rMBP and it worked without issue. To download the combo update you may simply enter "10.11.2 combo update" into Safari search box and it should give the Apple page for that update. Click Download, and after it finishes downloading double-click and let it proceed.

    Hi, Luis,

Thanks for the suggestion, although it didn't resolve the issue. I downloaded the combo update, turned off FileVault as an additional precaution, then tried to install the combo update. Like before, the process started and got through to the point where the Apple Logo and progress bar showed but, like before, the bar locked up at about 75% progress.

I had the same problem when I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan on my 2011 Early 13" MBP running a 960GB Crucial SSD and 16GB of RAM.

On other threads, they'll tell you to delete the kext files but that hasn't worked for me.

The only thing that works is to reformat (make sure you have a Time Machine backup), install 10.11.0 <-- (make sure it's 0 and not 1 or 2) and NOT update.

I hope you have a Time Machine backup ready so you can recover your data.

If not, you can use another mac, grab another spare drive and Target Disk Mode in using FireWire or Thunderbolt.

Best of luck.  Apple finally dropped the ball on this one.  I've gone into the Apple Store for help and they couldn't do anything about it.

Thanks for the suggestions, Eric. Except for fsck, I have tried these fixes without success.

Thank you, thatslowdc. I cloned my hard disk before attempting the 10.11.2 update so each time the attempted update resulted in a lockup of the boot process, I cloned the computers internal drive from the backup to get back to a working 10.11.1 system. So, I have a working system with all my data protected; I just can't get it to work after applying the 10.11.2 update.

    Hi

I tried the combo update and it failed to complete. Same as the Internet upgrade path.

In verbose mode the last message that displays is:

Set AWDL Automode - resuming AWDL

    It never completes

    You're welcome.

Wow, I just fixed it.  I loaded up 10.11.0 onto a SD card and reinstalled it over my current SSD.  Started back up and now able to access all my data again!  Best of luck!

    Same issue!

I've resolved loading 10.11.0 into USB disk and reinstall os over my disk.. No data lost and I've updated to 10.11.2 through Combo Update.

I've had problems updating from 10.11.1 to 10.11.2 on two Mac minis. One, a mid-2011 model, booted OK the first time after the update, but hung the next  time with the progress bar at about the two-thirds point. The other, an early-2009, stuck on the first reboot.

On both machines I forced a shutdown by pressing the power button, and both seem to have been OK after that. However, I'm still worried that something may be damaged. Is there any way to check the integrity of an installed system? I'd hoped SIP might be useful here, but on reading these notes it seems to be simply a way to restrict write access to the system files.

Thanks, Tmac121. After updating via the App Store caused a lockup in the boot process, I cloned my internal disk from my backup and tried the combo update but got the same lockup on boot. I again cloned from my backup, reinstalled 10.11.1 from a flash drive, attempted the 10.11.2 update again but it still locked up.

I had the exact same problem last night.  Needless to say, tried everything except fsck.

Sorry for asking a naive question - how do you load 10.11.10 on your SD card?

Hi, PrasadYR. The instructions for creating a bootable copy of the El Capitan installer on a flash drive can be found at:
