Q: Me and my mother in laws phone are recieving the same messages like it is one phone but is 2 phones with different numbers

My mother and law and myself have an iPhone 5S each. I was using one apple account for both when a message came up on my mother in laws phone about upgrading an app. Since then our phone believe they are one. We are recieving each other's messages and when we send messages to eachother it says we are the same number. We have 2 different numbers and all these messages are being sent on iMessage. I now created a new Apple account for my mother in law but the issue is still occurring. Please help

    if you create a new one for your mother in law then you will need to link it to her imessage:

    Hello thank you very much for your help. Can you advise me how I link the phone number and iMessage. I've gone into setting, message and the iMessage button is on but it doesn't give me the option to put the phone number in to link them together. Many thanks. Katherine

    Go back in and turn imessage off and then on.  then it should update the apple id if you already changed it on the phone.

     

    Also per the link:

     

    Get started on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Sign in to iMessage:

    1. Tap Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
    2. Tap Use your Apple ID for iMessage. Then sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID as your iPhone.
    3. Select the phone number and email addresses that you want to be reached at.

    Sign in to FaceTime:

    1. Tap Settings > FaceTime.
    2. Tap Use your Apple ID for FaceTime. Then sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID as your iPhone.
    3. Select the phone number and email addresses that you want to be reached at.

    After you sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPad or iPod touch, your iPhone will get a notification saying that your Apple ID and iPhone are now being used with iMessage or FaceTime on your iPad or iPod touch. You’ll get a notification for every email address or phone number that you enable on each additional device.
