    Hello coleworldd,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you'd like to send messages from your Mac, and have them being sent from your phone number.  In order to do this, you will need to link your phone number to your Apple ID by following the directions in the link below.

Get started on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Sign in to iMessage:

    1. Tap Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
    2. Tap Use your Apple ID for iMessage. Then sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID as your iPhone.
    3. Select the phone number and email addresses that you want to be reached at.

    Sign in to FaceTime:

    1. Tap Settings > FaceTime.
    2. Tap Use your Apple ID for FaceTime. Then sign in with your Apple ID. Use the same Apple ID as your iPhone.
    3. Select the phone number and email addresses that you want to be reached at.

After you sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPad or iPod touch, your iPhone will get a notification saying that your Apple ID and iPhone are now being used with iMessage or FaceTime on your iPad or iPod touch. You’ll get a notification for every email address or phone number that you enable on each additional device.

    Get started on your Mac

To link your phone number to iMessage or FaceTime:

    1. Open the Messages or FaceTime app.
    2. Sign in with the same Apple ID that you use on your iPhone.
    3. Select the phone number and email addresses that you want to be reached at.

After you sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your Mac, your iPhone will get a notification saying that your Apple ID and iPhone are now being used with iMessage or FaceTime on your Mac. You’ll get a notification for every email address or phone number that you enable on each additional device.

Learn about connecting your devices to send and receive messages.

Link your iPhone number and Apple ID to use iMessage and FaceTime

    Take care.

    Hi,

You normally set up the iPhone for Messages.

At this point it will use the iPhone Number only to send from (and Receive at).

You they set up the Mac for Messages using an Apple ID as the iMessages ID.

Then your add the Apple ID to the iPhone to link them and sync the Messages.

On both there are places to select the "Start (New) Conversations From".

You can set them to the same ID (or iPhone Number).

On both you can also restrict which IDs (including the iPhone Number) are used for Receiving as well.

Note by default if someone sends something to the Apple ID the Response you make is from that ID unless you tie the settings down to the minimum.
