You would want to download the movie to your iTunes library, then enable homesharing to stream across your local network...

Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices - Apple Support

I don't see anything in the apple tv menu for downloading to iTunes library.  i used to use my iMac to download unwatched tv shows at 1 am in the morning,  yes I got up and started the download)  after about 20 Mb a message would ask if I wanted to view now or later.  I said later and would go back to bed.  the next day I would simply click on the unwatched episode (now downloaded) and view the program
I would like to something similar with apple tv.  How?   (don't have the iMac anymore)

The ATV does not have storage for personal media the built in storage is for apps/games that you download via the App Store. the ATV is a media streaming device. You would need to get another Mac (or PC) and use the home sharing we discussed above to download and store personal media (music, movies, tv shows) and stream locally from across your local network or stream directly from the content provider (iTunes, Netflix, hbo etc).  Although you could also download movies on an iPad/iPhone and then AirPlay to the ATV...

You can not download anything to anywhere with an AppleTV. I found out early that you could purchase and watch iTunes movies and TV Shows, but they never get downloaded anywhere. If you want the iTunes movie files on your computer, then at any time after you've purchased it you can download it from iTunes on a Mac or Windows. But you have to go to iTunes and download it from there. Either way it will show up on your AppleTV in the appropriate category (Movies, TV Shows, etc). And as has been stated already, you must have Home Sharing turned on.
