Q: Apple TV 4 falls off network & number after name returns (2)

Since the latest update the apple tv is unfindable on the network once it goes to sleep. Prior to the update, it functioned normally and you could wake it from sleep via airplay.

Having to wake it manually every time i want to use it now, when it does, it comes up with Apple TV (2), each time i wake it its number increases.

Ive changed the name, restarted the apple tv and the airport extreme, the name issue comes right, but the wake on lan issue remains.

Until i wake it again then the number returns and starts increasing.

This problem was existent in the Apple TV 3 from update in september 2014, the problem stayed since, I've had them replaced, reset, updated and tried them on different networks, nothing changed the problem.

So it looks like we're stuck with the same problem again. Im not expecting anyone to give me a fix for this. This is merely just a post so that anyone with the same issues as me can see they're not alone.

Thanks for your post, Thomas. I'm having the same trouble.

When Apple TV 4 is connected via ethernet, its services - notably Bonjour sleep proxy - shut down once the unit goes to sleep. On wireless, the services keep running. (It's possible to monitor Bonjour services on a Mac, using the free third-party Bonjour Browser.)

I want to use the sleep proxy to fire up streaming from my Plex server on demand using the Plex iOS app. However, the sleep proxy appears to only wake the Plex server if ATV4 is hard-wired to the network.

Until a fix is available (or until I figure out how to downgrade the ATV software), I'll need to set the ATV4 to never sleep: power consumption is low, it seems, only a couple of Watts when fully active. Still, anyone with a data cap might want to disable the screensaver.

Apple needs to iron this out, it's poor form to introduce a problem from an earlier generation.

Note: If using the aerial screensaver, it only uses data when downloading new themes (which can be set to daily, weekly, monthly)

    Hi

I have the same problem but I have 8 appletv 4's three of which are perfectly fine. Go to sleep and wake up fine with connections from plex or AirPlay or the apple remote iOS app. I have to wake them and control them through the network as they are centrally located in a network cabinet with amps That then remotely send the video off to the TVs. I can't even use the siri remotes as the cabinet is metal and it doesn't work through It. Sometimes the appleTVs are fine and advertise, and then totally randomly they will not and I can't get the zone to wake up. They are all set with static IPs and they work fine again if I go and open up the cabinet and press menu on the remote.

Unlike the OP when they do wake up they don't have a number fixture.

    Thanks

Good news: the Bonjour sleep proxy is now working over Ethernet while the Apple TV 4 sleeps after switching ATV 4 to WiFi and back to Ethernet a couple of times. I read about this method in connection with ATV 3 problems. I now have the Airplay option back on my iPad.

The issue may not go away immediately, I'm only noticing this a couple of days later. I recommend the iPhone app "Discovery" (called "Bonjour Browser" in OSX), which allows you to check if Bonjour is doing its job.

PS, as before the ATV 4 is running tvOS 9.1.

I have the same problem.  My ATV4 is in a central rack and connected via Ethernet.  When the ATV4 sleeps, it is no longer possible to waken via the network which is a pain.  When I waken it with the remote, I have to wait before network control is enabled and the ATV4 connects successfully to the network.  The ATV4 is set with a static IP.  I've tried a reset but with no success.

I was relieved to see others have the same or similar issue.

Has anyone found a fix for this or do we have to wait on Apple to issue an update?

Although I'm not encountering network issues at all, I'm having the same issue with numbers ( adding one everytime it wakes ) but only with the ATV 4, my other two ATV 3 are fine

For me the numbers appear in brackets eg AirPlay (801) and the Apple TV doesn't wake when AirPlay is used. Restarting AirPort Extreme and the Apple TV 4 didn't fix it.

Rebooting my router, switching off file sharing, and then restarting the ATV4 didn't help. The two ATV3's are still fine but the ATV4 is back up to (2) already overnight.

Still the problems continue.  I'm currently seeing Apple TV (2469) on my Mac, and Apple TV (2135) on my iPhone when I select Airplay.

    Hi

A small update from me. I had the AppleTV's all set to static IP's and in an effort to figure out what was happening I changed one of them to dynamic IP. And then I started to get the counting numbers on the devices after the names (Left it like this for a week). I got the Bonjour explorer app mentioned above and it showed they are not advertising but I guessed that anyway. One thing I have noticed on my Netgear switch in the rack when the appleTV's go to sleep the lights go out on there connections almost like nothing is plugged in.

    Now what I've done today....

Set my test room back to Static IP then pulled the ethernet and Set the Same Static IP on the WIFI. (As I'm running remotely had to do FaceTime to someone else iPad to see what i was doing)  then as suggested above went between WIFI/ETHERNET/WIFI/ETHERNET/WIFI/EHTERNET leaving about 30 seconds between each.

So far Ive had an evening of perfection..

Any problems ill report back, but the only course of action after that will be to factory reset them

    Thanks

    Lee

    Lee-

Did the switching back and forth between wifi and ethernet solve the issue permanently? I have the same issues as above but only with the ATV4 (I'm doing airplay to a variety of devices). Apple Express and ATV3 work as advertised.

    Thanks-

    Greg

    Lee-

Thanks for the feedback. One note on my end, I have a managed ethernet switch which the rest of the wired network feeds through. As noted my ATV4s, which are connected via ethernet, kept falling off the network. In doing some sleuthing, I turned of IGMP snooping on my switch and now the 2 ATV4s are showing as available via Airplay more regularly though with the ever increasing number in parenthesis. However it is not clear yet whether I can connect with them each time. More to report on that later.

I had initial hopes that the TVos update yesterday would fix this issue but it appears not. My wired ATV4s have once again disappeared.
